4. Business: Inflation in Zimbabwe, You Think You Have Problems!
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Zimbabwe's central bank has raised interest rates by up to 75 percentage points to 785% in a new bid to curb soaring inflation, but analysts said the aim could be missed due to high government spending.

Zimbabwe's annual inflation rate accelerated to a record 782% in February, driven by a surge in rental, transport and education fees and dampening prospects of a quick recovery for an economy which has been in recession for six years. Inflation in January 2006 was 613.2%. To read this report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will expand its funding activities in Kenya to include microfinance institutions.

Mrs Melinda Gates, wife of Microsoft Corporation founder, Bill Gates, yesterday said the organisation had selected Kenya as the launch pad of the multi-million-dollar initiative.

"Apart from health, education and HIV/Aids, we want to expand our funding activities to include the micro-finance sector especially in developing countries," she said. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

7. Business: Vineyards in a Muslim State?

Uyurca, Turkey - When the Ozbek family began planting vines, their neighbours told them they were committing a mortal sin and would face divine retribution.

"They said it was wrong, against Islam, to produce wine. They said our soil would dry up and it would no longer rain or snow. But that was more than 10 years ago," said Cengiz Ozbek.

"Then they saw how much money we started to make. Now they too are planting vineyards," said the 37-year-old farmer, his weather-beaten face cracking into a smile. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK report.

Editor's Note: We have not yet tested this wine from Turkey, but when we receive a sample we will let you know the taste and quality. Meantime we encourage you to visit the Delamere Vineyard.

9. Education: Canadians and the Boer War
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As a former colony of Britain, Canada contributed a significant number of troops to Britain's ongoing three year conflict within South Africa, often referred to as the Boer War.

At the time, a number of persons within Canada expressed doubt about why they were supporting such a distant military venture, and even Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier was skeptical. This online exhibit from the Canadian War Museum explores Canadian involvement in this military action, and includes sections that provide information about the units and personalities involved throughout the conflict. Visitors can also view images of some of the awards that were associated with this conflict, such as the Queen's South African Medal and the Queen's Scarf of Honour, which were crocheted by Queen Victoria herself. The site is rounded out by a lengthy and well-composed essay by Dr. Cameron Pulsifer that provides a nice historical sketch of Canada's commitment to the South African War. Visit this site.

10. Immigration: New Point System for UK Immigrants
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The British government insists its new immigration policy is not directed at highly skilled workers or students from India but just to simplify the system of applications for visas.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, British Prime Minister Tony Blair says the scheme hopes to balance cracking down on illegal immigrants and genuine cases.

Now those wishing to come and work in the UK will have to get a certain number of points to be considered for a visa. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

11. Real Estate: Buying a Property in India
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Estate developers have always been wooing NRIs (Non-resident Indians) and have developed many estates - called 'colonies' in India - specifically for NRIs with swanky names such as Dollar Apartments, Windsor Manor or Bel Air Heights. In these estates such is the ambience that one has to keep reminding oneself that it is India and not the West! NRIs have readily invested in these homes for regular income from rent or for staying there when in India. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

12. Real Estate: South Africans now buying abroad
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South Africans lost interest in investing overseas a few years ago when property prices subsided in their favourite countries - mainly Britain and Australia - and the SA residential market boomed. But local investment yields have fallen to near international levels; a strong rand has made offshore property cheaper; and last Wednesday government increased the foreign investment allowance for individuals from R750 000 to R2m. 13. Travel: Take a tour of San Francisco
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

In the 1936 film, "San Francisco" Jeannette MacDonald sings the film's title song, which of course includes the Gus Kahn-penned lyric "San Francisco, welcome me home again/I'm not at home to go roaming no more." For those who might be pining for Baghdad by the Bay (or for images from the infamous earthquake in 1906), this online collection from the San Francisco Public Library will be most welcome. All told, the San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection contains more than 250,000 photographs of San Francisco and California, although not all of these photographs are available online here.

Visitors should begin their voyage through these images by using their search engine, which allows them to search by photographer, subject index, or by date. Perhaps the most novel way to search the images is to look through the photos by using an interactive map of the entire city. Here visitors can find photographs of the historic Moulin Rouge nightclub in the historic Barbary Coast area, or move on over to Sutro Heights over on the Pacific Ocean. For those who might be feeling a bit less adventurous, there are a number of thematic collections, including "Picture This: Family Photographs of Everyday San Francisco." Visit this site.
