1. Business: African Continental Free Trade Area
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Forty-four African countries have signed an agreement establishing a free trade area seen as vital to the continent's economic development, the head of the African Union said Wednesday. "The agreement establishing the CFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area) was signed by 44 countries," said Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of the AU commission. The creation of a free trade area - billed as the world's largest - comes after two years of negotiations, and is one of the AU's flagship projects for greater African integration. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

One of the most notable effects of the political change that has taken place in South Africa since December has been the recovery in investor sentiment. There has been a notable rise in foreign interest on the JSE. This is not only because of greater optimism about the country’s economy, but also because there is a very positive view towards emerging markets in general. Today, the Academic Family Tree contains nearly 700,000 researchers from dozens of disciplines, including education, linguistics, sociology, biology, law, history, and much more. Visitors may search the Academic Family Tree by research institution and individual. From here, visitors can view how individual researchers are connected to one another (e.g. advisors and graduate students). In addition, users can search for connections between researchers.  Visit this site.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

“My Africa” is set in Kenya, where a young Samburu woman, Naltwasha Leripe, takes viewers through her community’s daily life, tending livestock, digging “singing” wells deep into dry riverbanks and rescuing a baby elephant orphaned by a poacher’s gun. The project is narrated by Academy Award-winning (and Kenyan-raised) actress Lupita Nyong’o. The project puts viewers up close with a thundering herd of wildebeest migrating across the Mara River, a lioness as she captures her prey, and a baby elephant in a community-led sanctuary in Northern Kenya. 7. Education & Environment: Witness the Extinction of Africa's Iconic Rhino Species
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, died in Kenya, spelling almost certain extinction for one of Africa's iconic species, it was announced Wednesday. Sudan's death Tuesday leaves only two female rhinos of the species, neither capable of natural reproduction, both kept at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where Sudan lived out his final years.  To read more, go to our NEWS DESK link.

8. Immigration & Business: H-1B Visa

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced Tuesday that, likely through September 10, it is suspending a program that allows U.S. employers to pay an extra fee to have their H-1B visa petitions processed within 15 days. The suspension applies to U.S. employers seeking new H-1B visas, including for workers with a master’s degree or higher. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

9. Internet & Business: Freedom of the Internet?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Southern African Freelancers’ Association (SAFREA) notes with concern the passing of the Films and Publications Amendment Bill, which authorises the Films and Publications Board to regulate online content, in Parliament on 6 March 2018. While SAFREA applauds the bill’s efforts to protect children from disturbing content, curb hate speech and address the scourge of fake news online, the detrimental effect it will have on freedom of expression in South Africa, if signed into law, cannot be ignored. The Films and Publications Board will effectively have control of the internet, dictating what people can and cannot post. Everyone who generates some type of revenue from distributing content online will be required to register, pay a fee, and have their content approved and classified before it can be posted. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Photo of the Month
= = = = = = = = = =

What would it be like to orbit the Earth? The International Space Station (ISS) does this every 90 minutes, and sometimes the astronauts on board take image sequences that are made into videos. The featured time-lapse video shows many visual spectacles of the dark Earth below. First, as the video begins, green and red auroras are visible on the upper left above white clouds. Soon city lights come into view, and it becomes clear you are flying over North America. Click here.

This month's quote

= = = = = = = = = =

"Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up." ~ Stephen Hawking (1942-2018)

"The Performance Economy" ~ by Walter R. Stahel

The industrial economy is transforming from a production-based model into a more intelligent performance-based model. Yet despite the proven benefits that selling performance provides, too many managers and policy makers still focus on designing, manufacturing, and selling goods using costly economic models and production methods. Replete with case studies, new examples, and decades of proven research, the second edition of The Performance Economy outlines the strategies needed to face tomorrow's challenges by using science and knowledge to improve product performance, create jobs, and increase wealth and welfare.
