Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), a regional financial institution, plans to open a representative office in China in order to lower cost of Sino-Africa trade, officials said Wednesday. Lawrence Kimathi, KCB Group chief finance officer told Xinhua in Nairobi they are currently in discussions with Chinese government officials and the office should be in place by June. We hope to use the office to lower cost of the transaction between the Chinese and East African business community by enabling payment for imports and exports in local currencies," Kimathi said when KCB Group released financial results for the full year 2018. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Kimberley- Forget about Orania - a new “whites-only” settlement is rising in the Northern Cape and its founder is promising a free 1 000 square metre piece of land to any (white) South African who wants to help “fight against the uprooting of the white race”. The settlement, named “Eureka”, is situated outside Garies in the Northern Cape. Its founder, Adriaan Alettus Nieuwoudt, describes himself as the official co-ordinator of the Eureka Movement of South Africa. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (IOL)

Any future investors in SA need only be aware of three things. Firstly that there will probably be no electricity, secondly that any property they own may be seized at whim and thirdly that if they have a white skin they will only get slaughtered at a date yet to be determined. I based that last assumption on the bizarre finding by the SAHRC that Julius Malema’s threat to kill white people wasn’t hate speech because he hadn’t actually specified a date and so certain death wasn’t imminent. 7. Education & Business: Wives as Sex Slaves in Africa?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Niger’s top court has outlawed the practice of keeping women as maids and sex slaves known as “fifth wives,” capping a decade-long legal battle by one victim that could inspire others in the West African nation to seek justice, lawyers and activists said. The “fifth wife” custom, also known as “wahaya,” is when, in addition to the four wives permitted by Islam, rich men take on other, unofficial wives who live as domestic and sexual slaves, said Britain-based group Anti-Slavery International. Hadizatou Mani, a woman who was forced into slavery as a “fifth wife”, escaped over a decade ago and married someone else, but her former master took her to court accusing her of bigamy, said Anti-Slavery International, which backed her case. A Nigerien court initially ruled in favour of her master, but Mani appealed the decision. In February, the Niger Court of Appeals ruled that her first marriage was never valid and that all “fifth wife” marriages are illegal, according to court documents seen by the Thomson Reuters Foundation. 8. Immigration: International Organization for Migration
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Readers interested in learning about the perspectives of refugees and immigrants may appreciate "I am a migrant" (IAAM), an initiative of the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM). This project features the testimonials of more than 1,200 migrants around the world. Visitors can browse individuals' written stories by country of origin, current country, or hashtag. IAAM also features more than 20 short videos. Collectively, these narratives highlight the diversity of migrants' experiences. For example, Abdulfatha arrived in Minnesota from Ethiopia in 2004 as a refugee and is now a college student who hopes to start a nonprofit to provide information resources in Oromo (his native language). Another profile features Juliana, who left the Philippines to work in Greece, then after 17 years returned to her hometown with Reintegration Assistance from the IOM and started a business. In the project's words, "while we aim to promote positive perceptions of migrants, we do not shy away from presenting life as it is experienced." With content available in seven languages in addition to English, IAAM offers visitors the opportunity to gain insights into "the human stories of migration," and migrants are also invited to add to this project by sharing their stories. Internet Archive, a 501(c) (3) non-profit group, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Internet Archive founders Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat launched the Wayback Machine in 2001, to address the problem of website content vanishing whenever it gets changed or shut down. The service enables users to see archived versions of web pages across time, which the archive calls a "three dimensional index". Kahle and Gilliat created the machine hoping to archive the entire Internet and provide "universal access to all knowledge.” Visit this site.

The Bo-Kaap, situated in the heart of Cape Town, is weeks away from possibly getting greater protection as a heritage site. The City of Cape Town has concluded its public hearings into the proposal to declare a Heritage Protection Overlay Zone. Bo-Kaap is steeped in history, including being the birthplace of Islam in South Africa. The community is battling to keep its heritage protected from urban developers. Nestled on the slopes of Signal Hill, Bo-Kaap is one of the oldest formalised living areas in the country. It has a long, rich history which includes the oldest mosque dating back to 1794. This month's quote

= = = = = = = = = =

No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit for doing it. You cannot push any one up a ladder unless he be willing to climb a little himself. As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. There is little success where there is little laughter.” ~ Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919)

Book of the Month

The Price of Admissionby Daniel Golden. (Description of this book below)

Our reporter also reminds us that in view of the latest news (March 2019) about the ‘greatest scandal’ in the history of the education system in the United States that of being able to bribe officials in order to gain entry into top universities, this has once again raised queries of how the rich buy their under-achieving children’s way into elite universities with massive, tax-deductible donations. Writer Daniel Golden published a book a few years ago called “The Price of Admission” and he recently wrote an article in the Guardian regarding his successful book, which has now been revived in view of this recent scandal mentioned above. “My book exposed a grubby secret of American higher education: that the rich buy their under-achieving children’s way into elite universities with massive, tax-deductible donations.” It also reported that Russian Jew, New Jersey real estate developer and convicted criminal Charles Kushner had pledged $2.5 million to Harvard University in 1998, not long before his son Jared was admitted to the prestigious Ivy League school. At the time, Harvard accepted about one of every nine applicants. (Nowadays, it only takes one out of twenty.)

I also quoted administrators at Jared’s high school, who described him as a less than stellar student and expressed dismay at Harvard’s decision. “There was no way anybody in the administrative office of the school thought he would on the merits get into Harvard,” a former official at The Frisch School in Paramus, New Jersey, told me. “His GPA did not warrant it, his SAT scores did not warrant it. We thought for sure, there was no way this was going to happen. Then, lo and behold, Jared was accepted. It was a little bit disappointing because there were at the time other kids we thought should really get in on the merits, and they did not.” Read more about this excellent book.
