The latest job numbers clearly indicate that the economy is struggling. “The more the economy fails to grow the ripple effect will be seen in the employment numbers, if companies fail to employ people because of struggles then theirs would be increase in the levels of unemployment. What we have seen is that unemployment numbers have really remained stagnated between 25 and 26% therefore not much movement has been seen." Economists do not expect unemployment numbers to improve given the weak economic outlook. Youth unemployment remained high at 37.5%. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (SABC)

Tanzania has secured a $7.6-billion loan from China's Export-Import Bank (Exim) to build a railway line that will link it to its neighbours, President John Magufuli's office said on Wednesday. OAPEN is an online library that currently holds 2,500 open-access scholarly books. The site is maintained by the OAPEN Foundation, a non-profit organization established by a coalition of Dutch universities and libraries that is based out of the National Library in the Hague. The OAPEN Foundation collaborates with 100 publishers from eighteen different countries, including many universes presses, in order to provide librarians, researchers, and the general public with peer reviewed books about a variety of subjects. Users can browse through books by subject or filter by language. (The majority of books on this site are in English, although many are in Dutch, French, and Italian as well. Twenty-three languages are represented in total). While OAPEN includes items across all academic disciplines, the majority of books available on this site are in the social sciences and humanities. 6. Education: Hudson River School
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Hudson River School "refers to American landscape painting created between 1825 and roughly 1875" by a variety of artists who lived in the Hudson River Valley of New York, including Thomas Cole and John Frederick Kensett. The Albany Institute of History and Art's Making of the Hudson River School exhibition is more than a mere catalogue of these striking paintings - although, rest assured, fans of the Hudson River Valley school will certainly find numerous digitized paintings here. Rather, the site presents an exploration of the artistic, cultural, technological, and natural inspirations for this school of art. The website presents these inspirations through twelve themes. Each theme is accompanied by a short essay about its significance and additional archival material for visitors to explore. For example, on the Landscaping People page, visitors can examine the artistic usage of landscape art in eighteenth and nineteenth century portraiture. On The Geological Revolution Page, visitors can view geologists Amos Eaton's 1830 geological map of New York State. This collection situates Hudson River School paintings in historical and cultural context and are a joy to behold. Visit this site.

7. Education & History: Pope’s Visit to Auschwitz, Germany
= = = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

In his first visit to Auschwitz in his capacity as leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis prayed and met with survivors on the third day of a five-day trip to Poland that included meetings with young Catholic pilgrims gathering in Krakow for World Youth Day, a global celebration of faith. Choosing silence to convey his sorrow, Pope Francis visited the former Nazi death factory at Auschwitz and Birkenau on Friday, meeting with concentration camp survivors as well as aging saviors who helped Jews escape certain doom.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

8. Education & Environment: Africa’s Fishing Being Plundered
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

There is a silent epidemic plaguing Africa’s shorelines, borne out of a crisis of global governance, greed, and indifference:  the continent’s fish stocks are being depleted at an unsustainable rate, endangering the millions of people that rely on fishing for jobs and nutrition. According to a June report published by the Overseas Development Institute, stamping out unsustainable fishing in West Africa could create 300,000 jobs and bring in $3.3 billion in additional revenue. The biggest culprit is the so-called illegal, underreported or unregulated (IUU) fishing. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

9. Travel & Business: Single African Passport for Travel Now Active
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The AU is making efforts to popularise the use of a single African passport for travel across the continent. In a bid to show solidarity and promote free movement of Africans within their region and other parts of the continent, African heads of states are to carry an African passport for the next African Union Summit to be hosted in Kigali, Rwanda, in July. The heads of states will receive the African passport as part of the efforts of the African Union (AU) to popularise it. It is “symbolic and significant for the continent”, as well as practical, because if one is carrying an African passport he or she will not be expected to apply for a visa, according to Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, chairperson of the African Union Commission.
