1. Business: Future of the African Continent?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Africa is complex. Africa continues to defy every simplistic, normative label the so-called experts throw at the 30 million square kilometre landmass of 1.2 billion people, which comprises 54 sovereign countries. The term Dark Continent was used to describe a continent and peoples largely unknown and mysterious to Europeans. After colonialism Africa was the spectacular poster boy of disease, war, hunger and deprivation. At the turn of the 21st century The Economist was persuaded that Africa was The Hopeless Continent. Today, Africa is facing the worst economic downturn in two decades.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Star)

2. Business: South Africa has Joined BRICS Space Programme
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South Africa has joined a BRICS space programme, the first substantive project in the field of space cooperation between the BRICS member countries. A statement from the South African National Space Agency (Sansa) on Tuesday said that the country had joined the the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), the State Space Corporation “Roscosmos” (ROSCOSMOS) in Russia, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) to create the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation. 3. Business: Thinking of Doing Business in Democratic Republic of the Congo?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The president currently clinging to power in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and his family have a vast network of businesses reaching into almost every sector of the country’s economy that are thought to have generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues since 2003, according to a report. To read the full revealing report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Guardian)

4. Business: South Africans Now Paying the Price of Corruption
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South Africans are not happy. According to the recent Bloomberg’s Misery Index, South Africa is the second-most miserable country on earth. Venezuela tops the list of emerging countries. This isn’t too surprising considering that the country is embroiled in multifaceted crises. It also has among the highest unemployment and inequality levels in the world. Unfortunately, recent credit rating agency downgrades as well as the fact that the country is in recession mean that these horrid conditions are unlikely to reverse soon. The effect is that the poor must pay an additional tax in the form of bribes for access to mispriced and inefficient state services. In addition, as the looting via state capture and municipal corruption intensifies, service provision and delivery declines. This means that the poor are then subject to bribe inflation to gain access to shrinking capacity. Violent service delivery protests inevitably escalate. 6. Business & Education: Basic Computer Skills
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As basic computer skills continue to be essential for successfully finding and obtaining employment, the "digital divide" (a term that refers to the divide between communities with access to computers and related skills and communities who lack such access) persists. Minnesota's Saint Paul Public Library offers this extensive guide designed to help librarians, employment counselors, adult educators, and others teach basic digital literacy skills. This particular guide is centered on the Northstar Digital Literacy Assessment, a free online assessment that tests competency in nine skill areas, such as Basic Computer, World Wide Web, Social Media, and Microsoft Word. Readers will find an extensive collection of accompanying learning modules, readings, and short videos related to each skill. Visit this site.

7. Business: Another Sad Story of the Decline of Zimbabwe, Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I spent several hours with three shell-shocked generations of the Smart family last week who have been violently evicted from their farm in the Rusape district east of Harare by a top cleric, Bishop Trevor Manhanga, Presiding Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Zimbabwe church. The handling of the on-going eviction story of the Smart family and their workers by this prominent bishop is fundamental to understanding where we are - and more particularly where the church is - in our dealing with justice and injustice in Zimbabwe today. 8. Education: British Library

Turning the Pages is a software program developed by Armadillo Studios that enables libraries and museums to digitize books, manuscripts, and other documents in an engaging 3D format. Here, readers will find the British Library's spectacular collection of items digitized with this software. The collection may be of special interest to literary scholars, religious studies scholars, historians, and book lovers of all stripes. This ample collection, which spans centuries and genres, includes highlights from Leonardo da Vinci's notebook; a handwritten and illustrated history of England authored by a thirteen-year-old Jane Austen; and diaries kept by Robert Falcon Scott during his final journey to Antarctica in 1911 and 1912 (an expedition that tragically ended in his death). In addition, this collection features a number of religious texts, Mozart's musical diary, and much more. Items are accompanied by detailed annotations that provide additional context for each page. Livingstone Online is a digital museum and library dedicated to the British missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Launched in 2004, the project is an ongoing international collaboration between distinguished scholars and institutions, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This extensive and skillfully designed website includes no fewer than 15,000 digitized images and 7,000 digitized transcripts, along with critical essays. The result is a website that tells the story of Livingstone's life while illuminating realities about British imperialism, African colonialism, and Victorian medicine, among other topics. Visitors less familiar with the story of David Livingstone may want to start with the Life and Times section, which features detailed essays accompanied by select primary documents. Visitors may also explore the extensive manuscript collection in the In His Own Words section, which includes the explorer's famous 1857 manuscript, ‘Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa’, along with diaries, maps, and letters. Recently added to this collection are Livingstone's 1870 and 1871 Field Dairies, the later made available thanks to spectral imaging technology?  Visit this site.

The first great social space in the United States was not Boston Common, William Penn's Philadelphia squares or L'Enfant's great avenues of Washington, D.C. It was an artificial river, 4 feet deep and 40 feet wide, cutting across New York state. Like the Silk Road in Asia, the Erie Canal not only established physical links across geographic regions, it also remade the social and religious lives of everyone it touched. Rhino horn poachers have killed another six rhino in a single night shoot-up in KwaZulu-Natal's flagship Hluhluwe-Imfolozi reserve in South Africa. It is understood that 11 gunshots were heard on Sunday. At first light on Monday, Ezemvelo KZN wildlife rangers and anti-poaching units went to where the gunshots had been heard and found six dead rhino. All their horns had been hacked off and removed by the poaching gangs. This is the area where fewer than 100 southern white rhino were rescued from global extinction in the 1890s and subsequently multiplied to nearly 20 000 animals after being spread out to Kruger National Park and other wildlife reserves across Africa. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that his country and Ireland should seize the opportunity to be open and progressive as their big neighbors, the U.S. and Britain, turn inward. Trudeau said there are "tremendous opportunities for countries like Canada and Ireland at a time where perhaps our significant allies and trading partners ... are turning inward or at least turning in a different direction." He said the two nations should "make the pitch that Canada and Ireland are places that are exciting and open to the world in a positive, progressive way."  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. This month's quote

= = = = = = = = = =

“I want to remind you that success in life is based on hard slogging. There will be periods when discouragement is great and upsetting, and the antidote for this is calmness and fortitude and a modest yet firm belief in your competence. Be sure that your priorities are in order so that you can proceed in a logical manner, and be ever mindful that nothing will take the place of persistence. ~ "Walter Annenberg, Publisher and philanthropist (1908 - 2002 )

The Next Africa ~ by Jake Bright & Aubrey Hruby

The Next Africa, an Axiom Best Business Book Award winner, will change the way people think about the continent. The old narrative of an Africa disconnected from the global economy, depicted by conflict or corruption, and heavily dependent on outside donors is fading. A wave of transformation driven by business, modernization, and a new cadre of remarkably talented Africans is thrusting the continent from the world's margins to the global mainstream. In the coming decades the magnitude of Africa's markets and rising influence of its people will intersect with other key trends to shape a new era, one in which Africa's progress finally overshadows its challenges, transforming an emerging continent into a global powerhouse. The Next Africa captures this story. The Next Africa: An Emerging Continent Becomes a Global Powerhouse
