1. Business: Corruption in Kenya?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Kenya has signed a deal with Switzerland clearing the way for the East African nation to recover ill-gotten gains in Swiss accounts. It’s targeting at least seven hundred and twenty million dollars. A priority is money and assets linked to the Anglo-leasing scandal. Kenya also has the support of the United Kingdom and Jersey Island where it’s believed proceeds of crime amounting to millions are stashed. Part of this includes at least $2 million from a multi-million dollar scandal in Kenya in which several fake companies received funds for high tech passports and police forensic labs. 2. Business: Investing in South Africa, Beware of the Dangers
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Regulations on Mediation Rules, 2017 (Regulations) were eventually published by the Minister of Trade and Industry in the Government Gazette thirty months later, on 13 July 2018.  The Act came into force on the same day.  By publishing the Regulations and signing the Act into law, the South African government has effectively diluted the protection afforded to foreign investors at a time of anemic economic growth, high unemployment and increased concern about the protection of property rights highlighted by the ongoing debate about the expropriation of land without compensation. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

The leaders of the BRICS emerging economies have signed a declaration stressing the importance of an "open world economy", in which all countries benefit from globalisation. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa also backed an "open and inclusive" multilateral trading system under World Trade Organization rules. Does this mean the end of the negative rules of Exchange Control in South Africa? To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday that the ANC would support an amendment to a section of South Africa's Constitution to "explicitly" expropriate land without compensation. On Monday, ANC secretary general Ace Magashule told journalists Ramaphosa brought up the emotive issue of land during his political report and that there were things the ANC government could "implement immediately". President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday that the South African government had signed several agreements, including memorandums of understanding (MOUs) on investments, amounting to R14.7 billion with China. Various government departments signed agreements with the Chinese government in areas, such as the simplification of visas, while State-owned enterprises such as Eskom and Transnet, and private sector companies Standard Bank and Naspers also signed agreements. 6. Education: London in 1889-1903
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Charles Booth (1840-1916) was a British businessman and social reformer remembered today mostly for his efforts to document poverty in nineteenth-century London. He documented these efforts in his multivolume work Inquiry Into Life and Labor in London, which was published between 1889 and 1903. This publication was perhaps most well known for Booth's Maps Descriptive of London Poverty, which are color-coded according to wealth distribution in London on a street-by-street basis. In Charles Booth's London, a resource created by the London School of Economics (LSE), visitors can explore a digitized version of one of Booth's "poverty maps." As visitors view the map, they can use a slider at the bottom of their screen to transition between Booth's map and a modern-day Google map. Visitors may also conduct a search in order to explore a particular neighborhood or street of interest. In addition, visitors can explore some of the Booth's notebooks to learn more about his research process. These notebooks include a series of entries by police officers who assisted Booth in surveying neighborhoods for his maps. Visit this site.

A new book from Taschen, Massimo Listri: “The World’s Most Beautiful Libraries”, features images taken by Listri of the oldest and finest libraries around the world, from medieval to 19th-Century institutions and private to monastic collections. 8. Immigration: Work Permits to USA Now Doomed
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Barack Obama’s administration implemented a rule that granted work permits to certain immigrants on H4 visas. Known as H4EAD, the policy enabled the spouses of H-1B workers who were already awaiting green cards to apply for employment authorization. But now Donald Trump’s administration is expected to formally rescind the Obama-era rule – potentially upending the lives of tens of thousands of immigrants who took advantage of the H4EAD work permits. The proposed rules change, which was anticipated last month, but has not yet been announced, is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to reshape America’s immigration system. 9. Travel: Visiting Cape Town, South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Cape Town is one of the world's most beautiful cities. From almost any vantage point, there's a mountain or an ocean in view, and often both.  The weather is notoriously fickle -- it's easy to experience four seasons in a day, and some residents keep a jacket, an umbrella and a bathing suit in their cars all the time, to prepare for any eventuality. But that just reminds of the variety of things to do. If it's too cloudy to hike on the mountain, then there are art galleries, wineries and beaches. Swim with a penguin, burrow deep into the city's history, or just walk along cobblestone streets and take it all in. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (CNN)

One of our regular readers sent in this truly inspirational video clip of the Aurora as seen from Iceland.  What is an aurora? It is a natural light display in the sky (from the Latin word aurora, "sunrise" or the Roman goddess of dawn), predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. Aurorae are caused by cosmic rays, solar wind and magnetospheric plasma interacting with the upper atmosphere. Their charged particles, mainly electrons and protons, enter the atmosphere from above causing ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents, and consequent light emissions. To view the video clip of approximately 3 minutes and don’t forget to turn on the sound for additional inspiration, click here.

This month's quote

= = = = = = = = = =

“I’m not afraid of death. What’s to fear? Once you’re dead, that’s it. Nothing. I don’t believe in heaven or hell. That’s baloney. What matters is the here and now. “Yes, I’m 88 and there are things I can’t do: I can’t run a race or climb Everest. But isn’t life magnificent?” ~ Patrick Macnee (John Steed of the Avengers)
