2. Business: IMF Loan for South Africa
= = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Solidarity Movement said today that the loan of about R70 billion granted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to South Africa should be used to help the country in the midst of this crisis and should not be regarded as a donation by certain politicians for their own pockets or projects. This follows certain high-ranking officials who were recently involved with an investigation into corruption and tender fraud regarding the allocation and use of coronavirus emergency funds, and further bailouts to, among others, SAA. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

3. Business: Latest Report on the South African Job Market
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The number of take-home monthly payments in June 2020 decreased by -20.7% on a year ago. The crisis stemming from the COVID-19 lockdown levels and its impact on the economy, has affected a fifth of employees’ salaries that gets processed by BankservAfrica through the South African National Payment System. As the BankservAfrica Take-home Index (BTPI) records the majority of payments from large corporates and a fair number of medium-sized firms that are served by payroll service providers and firm-owned payroll administrators, the recent decrease may not reflect the full impact of salary declines on small firms. 4. Business & News: Want to Make Money, Start a Religion
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Money is said to be at the centre of a bloody battle for control of one of South Africa’s biggest churches. Earlier this month, five people died after an early morning attack on the expansive headquarters of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC) in the mining community of Zuurbekom, outside Joburg. Squabbling in the church dates back to 2016, when Bishop Glayton Modise died intestate. He left a personal legacy worth R400m, including R50m in cash, about 50 cars and a number of properties. Editor’s Note:  A new book, “Masters & Slaves of Modern Religion” is due to be released later this year that covers the corruption in modern day religions and how these cults control their followers by use of mind control.  If you would like to pre-order a copy, please contact us at admin@delamere-international.com

This report was received from a very close mutual friend in Oxford, England, (He always insisted he be indentified as R.W. although our editor knew his given name but was sworn to secrecy). The following is an excerpt from RW Johnson’s autobiography “Foreign Native: An African Journey”, published by Jonathan Ball. The book explains the reasons why he moved back to South Africa in 1995 and we admire him for his bold decision. “As for me, by 1995 I had been teaching in Oxford for 26 years. I had loved my time at Magdalen, but teaching is ultimately a repetitive business and I needed a change. In addition, my marriage had broken up and both my children had grown up and left home, which left me free to move. So when I was offered the directorship of the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) in Johannesburg, I decided to take the gamble and accept. I was an odd man out amid the general euphoria of the time. Everything I knew as a political scientist suggested that the ANC would fail to rise to the challenge of governing South Africa well.”  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link

Editor’s Note: Review one of the brilliant book that R.W. wrote, especially the comments from his readers.

In this episode, Neil Johnston and Christopher Day discuss a letter written by Catherine Howard, the fifth wife of Henry VIII, to Thomas Culpeper, a groom of the King’s Privy chamber. The document was part of a body of evidence collected against Catherine and Culpeper that ultimately led to their execution. It is now preserved at The National Archives. Here Neil Johnston explains how it is crucial to examine this letter in the context of Catherine’s sexual past in order to understand how the queen accused of living “an abominable, base, carnal, voluptuous, vicious life” was effectively blackmailed into a path of action that led to her untimely death. 7. Education & Travel: Facing up to Britain’s Murky Past
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The countryside holds a sacred place in Britain’s imagination – thatched cottages, resplendent country manors, imposing castles, ye olde worlde churches, sweeping pastures, wildflower meadows, gently ambling waterways and gardens in bloom are part of the nation’s fairytale, representing an Arcadia unsullied by cities, modernity, migration and globalisation. 8. Travel: Windsor Castle in London Now Open Again to the Public
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world, and the oldest in continuous occupation (over 900 years). It is one of the Queen’s three official residences, and is often said to be her favourite. She spends most of her private weekends at Windsor. The Royal Standard flies over the Round Tower of Windsor Castle when the Queen is in residence – at other times, the Union Jack flag flies in its place. Samuel Pepys proclaimed the Castle to be “the most romantique castle that is in the world”. That was in 1666, and the same is still true today. A “Must Visit” destination. Visit this site.

9. Travel & Business: Africa’s Airline Sector in Big Trouble
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The global airline industry’s representative body, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) on Wednesday released its latest analysis and forecast regarding the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Africa’s airline sector. The continent’s airlines are expected to suffer total losses of $2-billion this year and the entire sector is in danger of collapse, which would imperil $33-billion in African gross domestic product and 3.3-million jobs.
