Traders in Kenya stand to benefit from increased efficiency following the launch of InfoTrade in Kenya, which has consolidated more than 120 documents and procedures required for import and export business in Kenya on one online platform. The portal is estimated to serve at least 1.5 million users per month and consolidates 73 documents under exports, 52 under imports and one under transits (cross border trade) thus ensuring a shorter period in the export and import processes. It will now take a trader a maximum of five minutes to access summarised information on international trade procedures in Kenya. Visit this site.

2. Business: Kenya to Build Major Highway to Boost Africa Trade
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Kenya on Wednesday signed a $620 million agreement to build a 530 km (329 mile) highway from its east coast to the centre of the country, part of a campaign to boost its role as a regional trade hub. A consortium including a unit of South Africa's Group Five and the Development Bank of Southern Africa with work with the state. Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said in a statement the road would link Lamu on the coast to Isiolo, north of Nairobi, via Garissa. The consortium will design, build, finance, maintain, operate and transfer the highway. Work is due to start in mid 2018 and be completed within four years. 3. Business:  Barometer of Global Corruption
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

This is a summary report of the key findings from the ninth edition of Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer series – the world's largest survey asking citizens about their direct personal experience of bribery in their daily lives, their perceptions of corruption challenges in their own countries, and their willingness to act against corruption. The results of this latest edition of the survey have been published via a series of regional reports. This summary brings together those reports and covers 119 countries, territories and regions around the globe.  Visit this site to read the report.

4. Business: New Oil Refinery for South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South Africa wants the national oil companies of its BRICS partners to help build a new 400,000 barrel per day refinery that will be structured by senior debt and equity, energy minister David Mahlobo said on Tuesday. The idea of building a refinery in Africa's most industrialised economy has been under consideration for almost a decade. "South Africa is at a tipping point regarding its refining capabilities," Mahlobo said, adding that the cost of the new refinery was estimated at $10 billion in 2010.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

5. Business: Relations Between China and Zimbabwe
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

A trip to Beijing by Zimbabwe's military chief was a "normal military exchange", China's foreign ministry said after the army seized power in Harare. How deep are relations between China and Zimbabwe really? The news that General Constantino Chiwenga had visited China only a few days before the military takeover in Zimbabwe was a coincidence that did not go unnoticed. 6. Business: Reviving the Economy in Zimbabwe
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Current events in Zimbabwe show that while a week may be a long time in politics, it is really a very short blink of an eye in economics. Zimbabweans on the streets of Harare and Bulawayo may be hopeful for political change, but they are much more sanguine and realistic when it comes to improving the country's economy. Presidents can be impeached in days or weeks. It takes years to wreck economies and usually even longer to repair them. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

7. Business: The Problem Facing the World’s Poorest Nations
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Why are some countries rich and others so poor?  We encourage all our readers to view and listen to this enlightening video clip that offers the back ground to this question and supplies some very realistic answers.  The reason why some countries are rich and others poor depends on many things, including the quality of their institutions, the culture they have, the natural resources they find and what latitude they're on. As expected corruption by government and the political leaders is one of the major causes?  Click here to view.

8. Education: Restoration Printed Fiction Database, 1660-1700
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

For scholars of seventeenth-century English-language literature (which are often included in scholarly considerations of "the long eighteenth century") or book history, the recently launched Restoration Printed Fiction database contains 394 titles that are accompanied by bibliographic information. This Restoration Printed Fiction database was spearheaded by Texas Tech University English scholars Marta Kvande and Michael J. Faris. As explained on the site's homepage, Kvande selected texts for inclusion in this database by examining, "three main bibliographic sources (with some additions): Paul Salzman's English Prose Fiction 1558-1700, Robert Letellier's The English Novel, 1660-1700, and Robert Adams Day's Told in Letters." Visitors can search for texts by title, author, or bookseller. Alternatively, visitors can browse this collection through numerous filters, including, "Fiction that includes a patron dedication" and "Fiction that includes woodcuts." Visit this site.

The Library of Congress preserves recordings and sheet music of thousands of tunes from World War I. The Great War inspired thousands of songs, music that a century later still evokes a world at war, families separated, loved ones lost: “Over There,” “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag,” “Keep the Home Fires Burning.” Recordings of many of those songs are collected on the National Jukebox, a Library of Congress website that makes historical sound recordings from 1901 to 1925 available to the public for free. The songs of the World War I period, and the recordings of them in the Jukebox, reflect the spirit of nations going to war and the men and women caught up in the conflict. Visit this site and enjoy the memories.

10. Education: Toronto Star Newspaper
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

This year the Toronto Star, Canada's highest-circulation newspaper on overall weekly circulation celebrates its 125th anniversary and presents this online exhibit entitled, "25 photos worth remembering." Photographs range from May 31, 1900, featuring a view of Toronto citizens celebrating Britain gaining control of Pretoria, South Africa during the Second Boer War, to February 25, 2010, featuring a shot of Haley Irwin and Meghan Agosta enjoying a beer while lying on the ice after Team Canada's 2010 Olympic hockey victory over Team USA. The images present high points and low points in Toronto and Canadian history. Other photographs feature visits from Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana; the Stanley Cup, won by the Maple Leafs in 1967, and other sports victories; John Lennon and Yoko Ono; and the CN Tower under construction. There are also lots of images of fires, snow storms, and other natural disasters, such as the worst snowstorm ever to hit Toronto in December 1944, which overturned a streetcar. Visit this site.

In the spring of 1940, Nazi forces swept across Western Europe. By May, the Germans had invaded Denmark, Norway, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The French army was so devastated that a settlement seemed inevitable. And with the majority of British troops also under siege in France, Britain’s fate, too, looked to be at the mercy of negotiations with Hitler. Under these dire and seemingly insurmountable circumstances, one man would emerge to forge an alternative path. That man was Winston Churchill. To read the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Cape Town’s Chapman’s Peak Drive is both a marvel of engineering and a breathtaking stretch of coastline. The road took a few gentle twists as it rose on Chapman’s Peak’s western flank, and Noordhoek Bay spread out behind us. It wasn’t until we took a swooping right-hand bend that we realised we were in for something truly awesome. To read the full report and see the breathtaking photos, go to our NEWS DESK link. Editor’s Note:  Being December and including the season of giving, and a time especially important to our children and grandchildren, we thought this site would bring joy and inspiration to our many readers throughout the world, to whom we wish Season’s Greetings. Our recommended book of the month is A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Lewis Stevenson, a beautiful gift for any child or adult. Here is a delightful look at childhood, written by master poet and storyteller Robert Louis Stevenson. In this collection of sixty-six poems, Stevenson recalls the joys of his childhood, from sailing boats down a river, to waiting for the lamplighter, to sailing off to foreign lands in his imagination.
