1. Business: Africa Expands & Open for Business
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

With the right policies and linkages, Africa can become an indispensable global economic hub, Singapore's Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said at the Kofi A Annan Eminent Speakers' Lecture series in Abidjan. Africa must spread its economic openness by strongly showcasing specialisation along the production value chain and invest more boldly in social foundations. The continent must also maximise policy coherence and effectiveness, think in the long-term and maximise the benefits of global financial system, he said. 2. Business: China to Buy British Steel
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The news that China wants to buy British Steel for the relatively modest price of £70 million fits with a worldwide pattern of assertive Chinese infrastructure and acquisition, referred to by Beijing as the Belt and Road Initiative. No surprise, then, that the offer is reportedly linked to promised loans of £300 million to boost production at the struggling Scunthorpe plant. Such promises clinch deals and generate leverage. 3. Business: China & United States Dollar
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

China is trying to reduce its dependency on America. According to economists at ANZ, the trade war is causing the world's second-biggest economy to move away from the dollar, and instead upping its holdings of other foreign currencies.  "The ongoing trade war and geopolitical issues have increased the risk of a financial decoupling between China and the US," said Raymond Yeung, Greater China chief economist, in a note. 4. Business: Common Payment System for BRICS countries in the Cards
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, a group of major emerging economies known as BRICS, back the idea of developing a common payment system, a Russian official said on Thursday. Russia and its BRICS peers have been looking for ways to decrease their dependence on the U.S. dollar and have advocated using their national currencies in mutual trade. Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), said “increasing non-market risks of the global payment infrastructure” was behind the plan to integrate the group’s national payment systems. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note: From a report by our financial guru, this ‘common payment system’ is the next step toward forming a new currency for the five BRICS countries, which will compete against the US$, the Euro and GBP.  From inside information gleaned from the BRICS bank, funds from any member country will be able to move their financial assets freely between these five countries.  This is good news for our many readers who have blocked funds in South Africa as moving these funds to China for example will be an easy step and China has a much more relaxed policy of moving funds out from China to all other countries of the world.  Watch this space!

5. Business: Future of Africa?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The continent is hurtling towards an uncertain future that is being shaped by the forces of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It's too early to tell how exactly the confluence of rapid change and exponential technological advances will play out. But this much is clear: change will be constant and widespread. The uncertainty this creates has the potential to lead to insecurity. For our fast-growing and rapidly developing continent, this insecurity could have far-reaching implications. Africa is expected to contribute 54% of global population growth by 2050; by 2100, this figure could have increased to 82%, or 3.2 billion of the overall increase of 3.8 billion people. That many developed countries are seeing a decline in their populations - both current and projected - only highlights the unique nature of the challenge facing our continent. 6. Business: Investing in South Africa?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Multinational and local businesses at the 2nd South African Investment Conference took heed of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for investment and availed a combined  $13.5 billion (R200 billion) to be ploughed into the country’s stagnant economy. This year’s conference, a key milestone in the country’s bold ambition to raise R1.2 trillion in new domestic and international investment over the next five years, is held under the theme “Accelerating Growth by Building Partnerships”.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

7. Business: Risk of Cryptocurrencies
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Bitcoin slumped to a six-month low on Friday after China’s central bank launched a fresh crackdown on cryptocurrencies, warning of the risks entailed in issuing or trading them. The People’s Bank of China’s (PBOC) Shanghai headquarters said it would tackle growing cases of illegality involving virtual currencies. It also cautioned investors not to confuse crypto with blockchain technology, the digital ledger that underpins many cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin. The move came a day after regulators in Shenzhen launched a similar campaign, and came as the PBOC prepares to launch its own digital currency. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

8. Education: Download Standard e-Books
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

While free public domain books can be readily downloaded from resources like Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive, those wishing to read these finds on an e-reader or mobile device may be somewhat frustrated by their formatting or mistakes in transcription. This sentiment is the inspiration behind Standard Ebooks, "a volunteer driven, not-for-profit effort to produce a collection of high quality, carefully formatted, accessible, open source, and free public domain ebooks that meet or exceed the quality of commercially produced ebooks." Some of the ways Standard Ebooks strives to improve their source material include proofreading and correcting typos and ephemera, editing the typography and design for consistency, and updating the formatting to meet current e-book best practices such as tables of contents and popup footnotes. As of this write-up, more than 300 titles are available, including L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery, and P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves Stories. Visitors can browse Standard Ebooks' full library in order of newest additions, author name, reading ease, or length, and each e-book is available in four different file formats. Those interested in participating in this project should visit the Get Involved section to learn how. Visit this site.

This fascinating website was sent in by one of our readers and we thought it be would appropriate to share in this months Newsletter. “As photographers and astronomers, we set out to find and capture unique parts of the universe, when the sun sets the night sky opens up and show a small taste of what is out there deep in the distance. One of the most fascinating and often photographed objects in the night sky is the Milky Way. If you do a quick search, you will find countless images of this spectacular galaxy. So today, I thought it would be a good reminder to go back and find out what is the Milky Way and learn a little more about this mysterious part of the universe that we call home.” Visit this site.

The famous Horsehead Nebula in Orion is not alone. A deep exposure shows that the dark familiar shaped indentation, visible just below center, is part of a vast complex of absorbing dust and glowing gas. A sight like this makes one feel so humble in view of the greater visions of the Universe.
