1. Business: Burundi on the Brink of Collapse
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

At an intersection in this small farmers' town nestled in the misty mountains surrounding the Burundi capital, traders jostle to sell vegetables to passing motorists. Bujumbura is only 25 miles away and yet so far, deemed unsafe to travel to by many here because of the frequent sounds of gunfire and explosions coming from the capital's volatile neighborhoods. Business in Bujumbura is suffering greatly as a political crisis stemming from the president's seeking and winning a third term in office forces hundreds of thousands to flee into the countryside or to neighboring countries. The so called mega-deals penned between the Zimbabwe government and China and the adoption of the Chinese Yen will not do much to improve the economic situation in the Southern African country, a senior business leader said Wednesday. To read the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link. (IOL)

3. Business: Gold Discovered in Kenya, Is this a Joke?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The recent interest in gold in the Kakamega district of Kenya, reminds us of the first gold rush in the region – in the early 1930s. In 1930 Kakamega town ship was an open space with a few Indian dukas, but in the middle of the decade it became a prosperous and crowded township. To read this fascinating account of the discovery of gold in Kenya, go to our NEWS DESK link. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The governor of Russia's Far East Jewish Autonomous Region says the area is "ready" to house Jews from Europe who are facing anti-Semitism. Aleksandr Levintal said his region "will welcome Jews from European countries, where they may face attacks by anti-Semitic elements." Levintal also called his region "the first officially established Jewish statehood." To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

5. Business & Employment: Future Outlook on Jobs Worldwide
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, which includes developments in previously disjointed fields such as artificial intelligence and machine-learning, robotics, nanotechnology, 3-D printing, and genetics and biotechnology, will cause widespread disruption not only to business models but also to labour markets over the next five years, with enormous change predicted in the skill sets needed to thrive in the new landscape. 8. Education: History of Education in Kenya
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The first European Schools in Kenya soon decided to accept settler children as well. The teachers, A J Turner, a thin, dour man, and his wife A M Turner, had a total of 38 pupils by 1904. The school roll shows that many of these came from schools in India because their fathers had previously worked on railways there, a few from schools in South Africa and one from the Loreto Convent in Nairobi, a small school begun by Roman catholic nuns and sometimes called St Joseph’s Convent. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

9. Education & Travel: Ireland’s Rich Cultural Heritage
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI). This website skillfully works to preserve and share the data, objects, and narratives that contextualize Ireland's rich cultural heritage. Providing access to over 2,200 historical and contemporary items physically housed in collections across the country, the portal acts as a central hub, offering interactive multimedia tools and digital resources to archivists, researchers, educators, historians, and the interested public. Readers can find out more about the contributing institutions under Organisations, or browse/search the repository through the Discover section. Perhaps best of all, readers may opt to Visit the DRI Project Website to explore a sampling of current projects and online exhibits. For instance, just this January the DRI launched "Inspiring Ireland 1916", a two-part project with an award-winning website that presents objects from Ireland's National Cultural Institutions alongside publicly collected memorabilia to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. Visit this site.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan once acknowledged that the United Nations “rose from the ashes of the Holocaust” to save the remnants of European Jewry and provide the Jewish people with an opportunity to fulfill their age-old aspirations through the new nation state of Israel. This year the UN explicitly linked International Holocaust Remembrance Day to its own mission by solemnly invoking the theme of “The Holocaust and Human Dignity:” To read the full report; go to our NEWS DESK link.

11. Real Estate: Major Redevelopment of Redondo Beach, California, USA
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Redondo Beach pier juts into Santa Monica Bay, at the southern end of a string of beach cities loosely connected by a bike path and teeming with visitors. The pier and the waterfront require critical infrastructure repairs with estimated costs running as high as $108 million. The city is working with CenterCal Properties on Waterfront Redondo, a $250 million investment in a 35-acre redevelopment project. The company, based in El Segundo, Calif., promises a face-lift for every element of the waterfront. It is proposing 11 acres of public open space, an improved beach and swimming area, a public market, a 700-seat specialty theater, a boutique hotel, retail space and a wider boardwalk.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 13. Travel: Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town, South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679, the Castle is the oldest existing colonial building in South Africa. It replaced an older fort called the Fort de Goede Hoop which was constructed from clay and timber and built by Jan van Riebeeck upon his arrival at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652. Two redoubts, Redoubt Kyckuit and Redoubt Duijnhoop were built at the mouth of the Salt River in 1654. The purpose of the Dutch settlement in the Cape was to act as a replenishment station for ships passing the treacherous coast around the Cape on long voyages between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Editor’s Note: It is significant that this site and castle is being celebrated in its 350th year of existence and a campaign is now underway to have this historical building declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Click here.

14. Travel: Size of the Cruise Ship Industry
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The cruise industry has been growing fast in recent years -- and so has the size of its ships. It wasn't until the 1996 debut of the 101,353-ton Carnival Destiny that a cruise vessel exceeded 100,000 tons. Now the biggest ships are more than twice that size, with two in the top 10 having been built just this past year. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.
