1. Business & Environment: Generate Electricity by Means of Living Algae?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Solar power cells that use living organisms to generate electricity could one day bring power to remote communities. Fuel cells powered by living algae that are five times more efficient than current models, have been designed by scientists at the University of Cambridge.  It is thought they could one day be used to provide electricity to places where there is no existing electrical grid system, such as parts of rural Africa. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

After nearly four years of famine, displacement, and economic disintegration, the civil war in South Sudan remains one of the world’s most vexing geopolitical quandaries. Sparked by a 2013 political dispute between President Salva Kiir and his deputy, Riek Machar, the crisis has since taken on the explosive overtones of ethnic tribalism to morph into a contest between Dinka-dominated government forces and a range of increasingly fragmented ethnic militias.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

6. Business & Environment: Cape Town, South Africa Running Out of Water?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Cape Town, home to Table Mountain, African penguins, sunshine and sea, is a world-renowned tourist destination. But it could also become famous for being the first major city in the world to run out of water. Most recent projections suggest that its water could run out as early as March. The crisis has been caused by three years of very low rainfall, coupled with increasing consumption by a growing population. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

Editor’s Note:  To present the real reason why there is such an ongoing critical water problem is suggested in this additional report from one of our readers in Cape Town.  Read this report. For the latest report today 2 February, 2018, read more.

7. Business: World Wealth & Income Database
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The World Wealth & Income Database was launched in 2017 with the goal of, "providing open and convenient access to the most extensive available database on the historical evolution of the world distribution of income and wealth, both within countries and between countries." The database is the newest iteration of the World Top Income Database (WTID), which was launched in 2011 by economists Facundo Alvaredo, Tony Atkinson, Thomas Piketty, and Emmanuel Saez. WID.world contains data and infographics about dozens of countries, which visitors can explore in a variety of ways. In the worldview section, visitors can explore a number of statistics by manipulating an interactive infographic. These statistics include the average national income, average national wealth, and a variety of statistics about income and wealth distribution. Alternatively, visitors can explore data by country or by data indicator. Researchers will also want to check out the methodology section, which includes related published research papers.  Visit this site.

8. Business: Opinion on the Future of Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The past few months have suggested that Africa is undergoing a “deepening of a democratic recession…driven by elites’ development of new and subtle forms of political and electoral manipulation,” John Githongo writes for Foreign Policy. But the growing pressure for change from Africa’s youthful population is a better barometer of the continent’s future. To read the full article, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note: The International Monitory Fund forecasts world growth and the world economy is looking brighter.  However one glaring exception is the country of South Africa, which IMF has substantially downgraded its forecast for South Africa for this year and next. Read more.

Denis Lepage of Bird Studies Canada (part of Bird Life International) manages AviBase, which is an, "extensive database information system about all birds of the world, containing over 19 million records about 10,000 species and 22,000 subspecies of birds, including distribution information, taxonomy, synonyms in several languages, and more." Visitors can explore this list by conducting a text search (available via the search tab) and restrict searches by year, language, species, etc. In addition, visitors have the option of setting up a MyAvibase account, which is a tool designed to help one manage their own bird observation data. While these features may especially appeal to ornithology instructors and researchers, AviBase may also appeal to casual bird-watchers. For example, the "Bird of the day" offers a delightful way to learn about birds around the world.  Visit this site.

13. Education: Story of England
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

English Heritage is a British charity organization dedicated to preserving historic sites in Great Britain, including relics from the prehistoric, Roman, and medieval eras. For those who want to do a bit of British exploring from afar, English Heritage also offers Story of England, an illustrated tour of Great Britain from the prehistoric era to the present. Visitors are invited to explore the Story of England by era (organized into a timeline at the top of the webpage) and by theme (e.g., power and politics, religion, daily life). Once visitors select an era and theme, they can view photographs, artifacts, artwork, and more from that particular era, accompanied by a short essay. For instance, when one selects, "Gregorians" and, "Daily Life," they are invited to check out four illustrated essays related to this theme, including an essay about the eccentric writer Philip Thicknesse and an essay about the Wellington boots. The Story of England offers a delightful way to learn tidbits of fascinating British history. Visit this site.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Environmentalists have welcomed the planned 50 million new trees, but say ministers must stop allowing ancient woodland to be felled. The UK has one of the lowest rates of woodland in Europe and the area to be covered by the Northern Forest is one of the most denuded in England, with tree cover less than 8%. The emphasis of the project will be to increase tree cover around major conurbations to 20%. There will also be a focus on river valleys, where there are benefits for flood prevention and soil loss - as well as wildlife. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

15. Education: William Smith’s Maps of England & Wales
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

William Smith (1769-1839) was a land surveyor, mineral prospector, and geologist best known for creating the geological map of England and Wales in 1815. In addition, Smith completed a number of geological maps of individual English counties between 1819 and 1824. On this website, visitors can explore Smith's maps, which have been digitized courtesy of the National Museum of Wales, Stanford University, the University of Nottingham, and the Oxford University Museum of National Geography. Visitors can explore Smith's maps via the maps tab, alongside other historical and geological maps. These are organized on an interactive map of the United Kingdom. In addition, this website contains a biographical essay about Smith, along with an explanation of stratigraphy: "a part of geology concerned primarily with layering in sedimentary rocks." As the team behind this site notes, Smith used his knowledge of stratigraphy (although he never used the word) to create his impressive maps.  Visit this site.

16. Travel & Education: Food & Cuisine of South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South Africa’s identity is complicated, contested and unresolved. While Archbishop Tutu’s “rainbow nation” remains a noble aspiration, the current forecast is increasingly stormy. So, while it’s tempting to read South African cuisine simply as some kind of melting pot of the influences brought by those who migrated to the country, many of the country’s most notable and tasty dishes reflect histories of violent conquest, enslavement, and oppression. But even as post-apartheid South Africa remains locked in an unfinished struggle to digest and resolve the consequences of its troubled history and to recast a fresh identity based on equality and justice, its cuisine reflects the common humanity of its citizenry: their search for succor and comfort, identity, communion, and hope for a better day.  To read the full article, go to our NEWS DESK ink.
