7. Business: Featuring Los Angeles Manufacturing Hub of the USA
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Los Angeles is a sprawling metropolis, and it was poised to become a manufacturing giant because of its unique geography. As industry grew, so did an infrastructure of freeways that connects the ports to the eastern reaches of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, where factories had the space to expand. And in terms of jobs, the Los Angeles area is the biggest manufacturing hub in the country. There are a few reasons why. There is plenty of space here to build things like factories and runways. Plus that beautiful California weather? The huge ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles let companies quickly ship products to a global market, and get raw materials to build. A massive logistics region just east of Los Angeles, in the Inland Empire, is the first stop before products get on trucks to go across the United States. Editor’s Note:  The Delamere Group has plans during 2016 to open up an additional office in Torrance, California.

8. Business: What is the Answer to the Problems of Africa?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The greatest fallacy in all considerations of race and class in South Africa is that capitalism promotes racism and class division. On the contrary, it breaks down race and class barriers with unparalleled efficiency. It does so because they are bad for profits. Capitalism is not only the greatest economic system that has ever existed but is the most powerful force for liberating mankind from the shackles and chains of past prejudice, including those of race and class. 9. Business & Real Estate: Who Owns the Land in Kenya?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As part of our ongoing reports on the country of Kenya, our local reporter submitted this enlightening report. This report shows that the political powers of Kenya, mainly the Kenyatta family plus their “friends” own most of the prime land, now over 50 % of the countries land and wealth and this is what they planned from the day of Independence in 1963. One of our clients tried to buy a piece of land for his home in Kenya from one the companies controlled by the Kenyatta family, but was informed that the price must be paid in US$, which is totally illegal and a criminal act in Kenya.  But as the son of Jomo Kenyatta, namely Uhura Kenyatta is the current President of the Country, what does one expect? 10. Education: English as a Second Language
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

For teachers of English as a Second Language, the Cambridge English website offers a host of resources based on the organization's 100-plus years of helping English language learners. While many of the resources here are geared toward English language requirements in the UK, any ESL teacher will find helpful tips in the many free sample papers, lesson plans, teacher guides, and videos. Resources may be searched across various options, including Qualification, CEFR Level, Resource, and Skill. For example, conducting a search with Qualification set to "Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)" and Skill set to "Listening" returns a handbook for teachers, sample papers, lesson plans, teacher guides, and an excellent, seven-minute video that highlights recent changes to the Great Britain's specification exams. All resources are either freely downloadable as zip files or PDFs or may be watched online via YouTube. Visit this site.

13. Education: Old Maps Online
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Map lovers will find hours and hours worth of cartographic joys on this site that draws sources from the U.S. Geological Society, the National Library of Scotland, the Land Survey Office of the Czech Republic, and many other participating institutions. Beginning as a project between Klokan Technologies GmbH, Switzerland and The Great Britain Historical GIS Project, OldMapsOnline "aims to demonstrate a combination of tools for publishing historical maps with a focus on their easy accessibility for the general public." To scout the site readers may like to type a location into the search engine. For instance, entering New London, Connecticut returns maps from 1848, 1893, 1958, and 1989 of New London's harbors, landmarks, neighborhoods, and roads. Meanwhile, entering Abu Dhabi returns dozens of maps dating back to the 18th century, including a beautiful Map of Persia compiled by the British War Office in 1891. Visit this site.

15. Education: Railroad History in the USA
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The history of America is, to a large extent, a history of railroads. Railroads connected the coasts, helped fashion the modern economy, and allowed for greater mobility of goods and people in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This history of the railroads, though somewhat one-sided (no mention here of the displacement of hundreds of thousands of native people), covers a lot of ground. Fifteen short chapters take readers from the advent of the American railroads in the 1820s, through the golden age of the 1880s and 1890s, all the way up to the 1980s and onward. In addition, chapters highlight six early notable railroads in Ohio, New Jersey, New York, and South Carolina, among other locales. Visit this site.

Work is under way on the Royal Navy's second new aircraft carrier, the Prince of Wales, at the BAE Systems yard on the River Clyde. BBC Scotland has had a look around the carrier's forward island and bridge before it is moved to the Rosyth dockyard where final assembly is due to begin later this year. 17. Education: The Franklin Mystery - Life and Death in the Arctic
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

In 1845, two ships set out from England to explore the Canadian Arctic, locate a northern route to China, and gather geomagnetic data. Both ships and all 129 men aboard, including Captain John Frankin, disappeared. Despite multiple rescue missions over the next dozen years, no one was ever located or saved. This site, from the University of Victoria, traces the unsolved mystery that befell the crews of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. After perusing the gloss on the homepage, readers will want to search the various historical documents that present the fragmented story of this long ago tragedy. For instance, Franklin's Last Voyage uses a mix of historical documents and contemporary narrative to piece together the chain of events that led to the disappearance. Searching and researching, meanwhile, unravels the mystery further through the first hand accounts of the various expeditions that went looking for the original crew. The Ripples and Ice Jams and Interpretations sections also provide rich narratives. Visit this excellent site.

At 11.15 on the morning of 3 September, 1939, a dejected Neville Chamberlain broke the news to the nation that Britain’s request for Germany to withdraw its forces from Poland had been ignored, with words that would echo through history. “I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.”  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

“My tastes are simple,” Winston Churchill once averred. “I am easily satisfied with the best.” Churchill was born into the aristocratic family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a charismatic politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Sudan, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. Probably his most famous quote was “We shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.” To read this informative article about Sir Winston, in memory of the 50th year of his death and a tribute to his inspiration for today’s world leaders, click here.

Canyon Lake Ranch in Texas was once a playground for Christian day campers, and then was a corporate retreat with water-skiing, barbecues and cowboy shoot-’em-up shows. Hawks now circle above 108 sun baked acres occupied by copperhead snakes, a few coyotes and the occasional construction truck. Soon this ranch will be a gated subdivision of 99 mini-mansions designed for buyers from mainland China.
