Vintage Shopper is run by a husband and wife team out of Los Angeles, CA. It was founded in 2002 as a small online retail store dedicated to selling vintage-inspired clothing, home decor, accessories, collectibles, jewelry, etc. However, we have recently changed that model to one of a vintage community; with the goal to connect vintage shoppers with vintage businesses and amazing products. Whether it’s through fashion, music, decorating or collecting trinkets from eras past, Vintage represents a lifestyle that has grown in popularity across the world and now infuses our daily lives with the nostalgia of a bygone era. That, along with the ever growing number of small vintage-themed businesses popping up online and on street corners, we recognized a need to help Vintage Shoppers shop and businesses market themselves.  Visit this site.

At 5:30 in the Namibian enclave Swakopmund, whose century-old buildings still bear the imprint of German colonization, solitary men in khaki uniforms emerge from houses and apartment complexes, the white reflective strips on their pants flashing as they walk briskly through the darkness. They are not African but Chinese.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (NY Times)

A new report just produced by the global research and consultancy firm Oxford Business Group (OBG) shines a spotlight on Kenya’s ambitious infrastructural drive, which is playing a key role in boosting GDP growth. The Report: Kenya 2017 pinpoints the opportunities emerging on the back of the country’s project pipeline, with real estate, power and transport infrastructure among the segments ripe for development. Sub-Saharan Africa’s economic growth outlook is “subdued” as the region’s oil producers delay policy adjustments needed to trigger and sustain expansion momentum, the International Monetary Fund said. The area’s gross domestic product will probably expand 2.6 percent this year from 1.4 percent in 2016, the IMF said in an emailed copy of its Regional Economic Outlook.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 4. Business: A Zimbabwean Perspective

History is littered with cases of peoples and nations that allowed tyranny to overcome them. Once the slide was allowed to start – and then continue – the gathering snowball effect destroyed everyone and everything in its path. I come from Zimbabwe and have personal experience of being hit by the avalanche that is created by allowing the rule of law to break down. I want to speak from that perspective and give some pointers on how it happened and what we did – or didn’t do – to stop it.  I hope that you are able to listen to, and understand what happened north of the Limpopo River - and to learn from it. A team of British organizations (including the Zoological Society of London, the British Trust for Ornithology, Froglife, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) created Garden Wildlife Health with UK-based gardeners in mind. Nevertheless, this collaborative project offers plenty of information and resources for anyone interested in biodiversity and environmental issues. This crowd-sourced project provides British gardeners with information about how to identify diseases in amphibians, birds, reptiles, and hedgehogs. Gardeners and other nature observers are encouraged to report their own data about garden wildlife which are then used by Garden Wildlife Health to prepare reports and recommendations. On this website, visitors can learn more about how to spot diseases in common wildlife and check out Best Practice Advice for wildlife preservation. Visit ths site.

Irish connections to North America are many and varied. Direct links with Native Americans, however, are harder to come by. Mary Jemison was born mid-Atlantic in the autumn of 1743, on board the William and Mary which was bringing her parents, Thomas and Jane Jemison, from Northern Ireland to America. After landing in Philadelphia they joined other Protestant Scots-Irish immigrants who were heading west in search of cheaper land. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note: Mary Jemison left a record of her plight of living with American Indians. This is a story of extraordinary courage and human survival as told by the subject herself. Jemison recounts how she was captured as a teenager by Shawnee Indians, who mutilated and killed her family. This spectacular Google Arts and Culture page was recently awarded the 2017 Webby Award for Best Educational website. Developed in collaboration with the National Parks Service, this website allows visitors to experience the wonder of five different national parks in the United States: Kenai Fjords National Park, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Bryce Cannon National Park, and Dry Tortugas National Park. After selecting a park of interest, visitors can take a virtual tour of each park headed by an expert park ranger. These interactive tours include three-dimensional video and camera footage, interactive visuals, historical footage, and more. For example, visitors can observe the rate of glacial melting between 2004 and 2016 in the Kenai Fjords, or use the Night Sky feature to locate and learn about constellations and stars in Bryce Canyon. 10. Immigration: Complaints About the Green Card Lottery?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Recently I have received the veritable flood of e-mails from companies in the USA trying to lure me into entering the lottery for a green card. Half the e-mail I receive comes from people offering me opportunities I dare not resist: prizes running into millions of dollars, discounts on exotic holidays and lucrative shares in offshore companies. Of course, I know better than to fall for such scams and steer clear of them with a sterilised bargepole. But what’s been getting my goat recently is the veritable flood of e-mails from companies in the US trying to lure me into entering the lottery for a green card, which opens the door to permanent residence in the so-called land of the free. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (IOL)

Editor’s Note:  What the writer of this report does not realize because of his lack of knowledge is that most of these email messages come from his fellow South Africans, plus other (non-USA connections).

Desiring an American education for his children, William Li said he put $500,000 into a visa program that provides green cards in exchange for job-creating investments in the U.S.  After giving his money to the California Investment Immigrant Fund in 2011, the Chinese businessman took annual trips to Los Angeles. Each time, he said, a representative would take him on a tour of various vacant sites around Rancho Cucamonga and assure him the developments were on track.  To read what happened and also the full story, go to our NEWS DESK link. I’d heard of citizenship-for-sale initiatives in the past, and – prompted by the ad – I briefly wondered whether a second citizenship beyond my American one was something I might need. Is this something that people other than the uber rich are considering, and for reasons other than tax optimisation? And if so, why? To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

South Africa is working towards allowing all African citizens to enter the country without visas – but at first “trusted travelers” like diplomats, officials, academics, business people and students will be the only ones to benefit. The Department of Home Affairs outlines the steps that will be taken towards scrapping visa requirements in its latest White Paper on International Migration, which was adopted by cabinet six weeks ago.

The Kenyan government has reportedly issued a travel warning to Kenyans planning to travel to South Africa, urging them to be wary of "a rising wave of crime". According to Kenyans.co.ke, the east African country's ministry of foreign affairs issued a memo dated April 24, raising concern over increased robberies, carjacking, theft, burglary, kidnap, rape and mugging against foreigners in South Africa. "The most worrying element of this crime wave is the rising number of incidents of attacks within the vicinity of hotels," foreign affairs principal secretary Monica Juma was quoted as saying. Diplomacy in the Early Islamic World -A Tenth-century Treatise on Arab-Byzantine Relations ~ by Maria Vaiou

Arab messengers played a vital role in the medieval Islamic world and its diplomatic relations with foreign powers. An innovative treatise from the 10th Century ("Rusul al-Muluk", "Messengers of Kings") is perhaps the most important account of the diplomacy of the period, and it is here translated into English for the first time. "Rusul al-Muluk" draws on examples from the Qur'an and other sources which extend from the period of al-jahiliyya to the time of the 'Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tasim  In the only medieval Arabic work which exists on the conduct of messengers and their qualifications, the author Ibn al-Farr rejects jihadist policies in favor of quiet diplomacy and a pragmatic outlook of constructive realpolitik. "Rusul al-Muluk" is an extraordinarily important and original contribution to our understanding of the early Islamic world and the field of International Relations and Diplomatic History.
