Attention subscribers to the Delamere-International Newsletters

As you may be aware, on May 25, 2018, the EU General Data Protection Regulation EU (2016)/679 (GDPR) came into force in all EU member states. The GDPR applies to “personal data,” meaning any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified by reference to an identifier. It requires that personal data be processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner, and that personal data be collected for specified and legitimate purposes. The Delamere Group holds email addresses which can include personal data. The Delamere Group relies on its legitimate interests to process this data so that we can keep you up to date with developments for the topics to which you subscribe. The Delamere Group does not make any other use of this data.

The Delamere Group respects your personal data and takes care to maintain its confidentiality. You have the right to unsubscribe from the e-mail newsletters and alerts at any time sending us a blank email with the subject line indicating “Unsubscribe”.

The new General Data Protection Regulation – or GDPR – it came into force on Friday 25 May. But we’re sure you already know that, from the mountain of plaintive messages clogging up your inbox at the moment. In case you’re one of those rare beings who never ever checks their emails, the GDPR is an EU regulation, and constitutes a massive privacy shake-up that will force companies to look at how they hold people’s personal data. Read this report on GDPR from the BBC.

1. Business: Africa’s Economic Conditions Improving?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The economic environment for private equity investments in Africa is promising compared to a few years ago when the global economy was in a downturn, and this improvement in economic conditions is encouraging and reflects Africa’s status as the world’s fastest urbanising continent. This is according to Romain Py, investment director and head of transactions at African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) who was at the African Utility Week currently taking place at the Cape Town Convention Centre. 2. Business: BRICS & New Development Bank
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The New Development Bank (NDB), set up by the BRICS group of major emerging economies, wants loans to the private sector to eventually take up a 30 percent share of its project portfolio, a senior executive at the bank said on Tuesday.  Zhu Xian, the NDB's chief operating officer, told Reuters that the bank was targeting an overall 70-30 split between sovereign and non-sovereign loans in its project portfolio, and was seeing strong demand for private sector loans especially in Brazil, South Africa and Russia. The Shanghai-based bank on Monday approved six new projects which brought its loan portfolio up to over $5.1 billion across 21 projects. Two of these were non-sovereign loans, which are issued to companies without a government guarantee. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

3. Business: Is This the Future of South Africa?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Ramaphoria is the warm, fuzzy feeling that washed over South Africa with the ascension of Cyril Ramaphosa to the presidency in December. With the departure of Jacob Zuma, the pall of gloom that had hung over the nation for almost a decade was lifted. For years there have been sporadic and seemingly spontaneous eruptions of discontent in many parts of SA. This week a Human Sciences Research Council survey reported that 13% of North West residents now see public violence as an effective instrument of political change.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

4. Business: Massive Fraud Warnings in Kenya
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Kenyan investigators have summoned more than 40 people for questioning after a “massive theft of public funds” at the country’s National Youth Service (NYS), the head of the directorate of criminal investigations said on Sunday. Domestic media reports said 10 billion shillings ($100million) had been stolen through fictitious invoices, and multiple payments on one supplier invoice, at the NYS. As a service to our many clients and possible investors in South Africa, we ask you to note the following update. Telkom (a Government owned company) customers are fed up with the poor customer service they have been receiving from the information and communications technology services provider. Customers are at their wits’ end because Telkom has not been meeting their communication needs. About 50 readers raised their frustration with Telkom in BackChat, a platform for Daily News readers to voice their thoughts. These frustrations ranged from telephone lines that were not working to poor customer service. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (IOL)

To produce their Arts and Culture service, Google collaborated with over 1,200 museums, galleries, and institutions from around the world to digitize some of their exhibits and make them available online. Exhibits can be browsed by a number of facets, including time period, artist, and color. Many exhibits were digitized in 3D and can be explored in virtual reality using Google Cardboard. Users may also take virtual tours through some of the world's most famous museums and landmarks. In addition to the online experience, the Arts and Culture app can also be used to enrich real-world enjoyment of the arts. It features an art recognizer feature that can identify artwork and provide additional context for them. It can also notify users of nearby exhibits and cultural events. Visit this site.

9. Education & Environment: Conservation in Mozambique
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

A game park in Mozambique which conservation legend Paul Dutton saw in the depths of despair during that country’s war years now gives him hope, as he watches conservation sink into trouble in KwaZulu-Natal. He saw the park reduced to total devastation after wildlife became the protein source during Mozambique’s civil war. Now it’s an island of hope as elephant, hippo, lion, sable antelope and other species’ numbers have recovered. Locals run the park and tourists are pouring in. In nineteenth-century England, circulating libraries allowed subscribers to borrow books for an annual fee. English professor Troy Bassett of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne has created At the Circulating Library: a "biographical and bibliographical database of nineteenth-century British fiction" spanning from 1837 through 1901. This database, which is hosted by the Victorian Research Web, includes over 15,000 titles and includes novels from The English Catalogue of Books and the British Library Integrated Catalogue. In addition to novels, the collection also includes information about literature that was serialized in popular periodicals. Visitors may browse this database by title, author, year, or publisher. In addition, visitors can browse via a number of designated genres (which include Gothic Novel, Military Fiction, Slum Fiction, and Character: Fallen Woman, to name just a few) as well as designated groups (including American Authors, Suffragists, and Bronte Family). The Spiral Galaxy

This galaxy is having a bad millennium. In fact, the past 100 million years haven't been so good, and probably the next billion or so will be quite tumultuous. Visible toward the lower right, NGC 4038 used to be a normal spiral galaxy, minding its own business, until NGC 4039, to its upper left, crashed into it. The evolving wreckage, known famously as the Antennae, is featured here. As gravity restructures each galaxy, clouds of gas slam into each other, bright blue knots of stars form, massive stars form and explode, and brown filaments of dust are strewn about.  Click here.
