1. Business: Brazil’s Economy Now in Big Trouble?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

On 1 January, 2019 when Brazil's far-right president Jair Bolsonaro took office, many in the country were concerned that the divisive politician would not be able to bring the country together. But one sector was almost unanimous in praising Mr Bolsonaro's rise to power: business people. But expectations soon started to fall apart. A series of government blunders - political infighting inside the administration, a clumsy attempt at state intervention in Brazil's fuel policy and the lack of leadership in Congress - hampered growth expectations. Brazil are part of the BRICS group so lets hope this does not spill over to the other countries links to Brazil.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

4. Business: Update on the South African Economy
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Many comments have been made about the economy and how colonialism and white monopoly capitalism have spoilt everything for the majority of people in this country of South Africa.  There are many voices, some with impressive numbers of followers on Twitter, who support the EFF line of thinking and seriously suggest that the entire structure of the economy should be dismantled and rebuilt along the lines of hugely successful socialist utopias such as Venezuela. The Linda Hall Library in Kansas City, Missouri, bills itself as "the world's foremost independent research library devoted to science, engineering, and technology." Here, readers around the world can access the library's digital collections which boast nearly 250,000 images from its extensive History of Science Collection. These digital collections allow visitors to explore "significant, rare, and fragile items" from the Linda Hall collections, including a 15th-century edition of Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia (the library's oldest book), a copy of the esoteric text Canon Chronicus Aegyptiacus owned by Isaac Newton, and one of William Herschel's handwritten notebooks containing his thoughts on optics and mathematics. Readers can also explore more than 20 themed collections (found by hovering over the collections link on the main page), some of which were inspired by previous library exhibitions. Topics are quite diverse and include the lengthy history of parachutes (and related devices), the even lengthier history of technologies for telling time, and a collection that "document[s] the discovery and acceptance of pre-historic man." Visitors can easily search the entire digital collection by keyword and filter the results by collection, creator, date, and subject, and the site also has an advanced search feature to search multiple fields simultaneously. 7. Education & Environment: Horrific & Abusive Lion Farming
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

After commissioning a year-long investigation, codenamed Operation Simba, into SA’s lion farming – Lord Ashcroft has called on the South African Government to put a stop to “lion farming” which he describes as “horrific and abusive” and of zero conservation value. Thousands of lions are deliberately bred in South Africa to be killed as hunting trophies or for their bones (which are in demand in South East Asia and China for ‘traditional’ medicines including aphrodisiacs). “The captive-bred lion industry shames South Africa – indeed it shames us all,” said Lord Ashcroft. 8. Education & Business: Human Microchips Now Used for Total Control?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Independent newspaper reports that Swedish workers were implanted with microchips– the size of one grain of rice– to replace cash cards and ID passes. Microchips are injected in between the thumb and index figure and injected with a syringe.  Would you agree to this procedure if enforced by your company or employer? The human microchip is similar to the one used for pets. Except these chips show how often an employee comes to work or what they buy at a store. Epicenter oversees more than 100 companies and roughly 2,000 employees. It began implanting some employees with microchips four years ago, in January 2015. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Differently to most of the world, every medium is still growing in Africa: internet, TV, radio, out of home, as well as print in some regions. Sub-Saharan advertising to GDP ratio is still very low at 0.15%, but there are immense opportunities for growth due to expanding middles class, urbanisation and mobile first technology. Group M, WPP’s world-leading global media investment group, has launched the Africa Media Index, its inaugural study on the media landscape, in Africa. The study aims to provide insights on trends and knowledge of the media sector and how it affects investment, governance, local business and economies. = = = = = = = = = =

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature -- the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter." ~ Lord Delamere (1811-1887)
