1. Business: Conundrum of Inequality in South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The final great factor increasing inequality in South Africa is the black elite itself, not just the politicians but the civil service and the functionaries in the state owned enterprises. This group has rewarded itself richly since 1994 – public sector pay is usually 30% higher than its private sector equivalent. In practice almost all these jobs are racially reserved for blacks (particularly Africans). The politicians have almost invariably become not just well off but rich. Corruption is the norm, with many politicians and civil servants also running private companies to which they divert orders. To these groups one should add the small number of politically connected blacks who benefit from massively lucrative BEE deals. Naturally, these groups are densely interconnected. Together they absorb large amounts of money – South Africa’s civil service, for example, is both far larger and far better paid than any of its peers in middle income developing countries. 2. Business & Internet: General Data Protection Regulations to be Introduced on 25 May 2018
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Europe wants to conquer the world all over again. Only this time, its killer app isn’t steel or gunpowder. It’s an EU legal juggernaut aimed at imposing ever tougher privacy rules on governments and companies from San Francisco to Seoul. When the region’s regulators roll out the changes — known as the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR — on May 25, it will represent the biggest overhaul of the world’s privacy rules in more than 20 years. What is GDPR? It is new regulations on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation). These new regulations will have a great impact on company news, newsletters and emails, all documents sent over the internet, including advertising. To read more, go to our NEWS DESK link.

4. Business: Political Turmoil in Kenya?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As Kenya’s political crisis continues to lurch forward, both Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga of the coalition National Super Alliance (Nasa) party, continue to shadow box, repeatedly throwing jabs and blaming each other for the situation. The last few months of political turmoil have incorporated annulled elections, an election rerun boycotted by the opposition and challenged in court, bloody and deadly clashes between security forces and protesters, a media crackdown and several inaugurations, one officially by the president and a mock one by the opposition leader. 5. Business: State of Emergency in Ethiopia
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Ethiopia announced a state of emergency on Friday after Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Thursday announced his intention to step down amid a political crisis in the Horn of Africa country. The ruling EPRDF coalition’s council met on Friday and decided to impose emergency rule, the state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation said. The announcement did not say how long the rule would be in place. The council “came to the conclusion that imposing emergency rule would be vital to safeguarding the constitutional order of our country”, it said. Further details are expected to be given by the defense minister on Saturday morning. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (SABC)

6. Education & Music: Beauty of Music, the Pipe Organ
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

As part of a renovation of the chapel for its 250th anniversary last year, the Schlicker has left the building. Built in 1963 for St. Paul’s, New York City in purportedly Bachian style, with an eye toward the then-burgeoning early-music movement, the organ has been replaced by a more versatile, well-used 1989 Noack pipe organ, which was fitted into the chapel’s slightly expanded 1802 cabinet. And as part of another renovation, of Trinity Church itself, the 15-year-old digital instrument will be replaced by an $8 million pipe organ now being made by Rosales Organ Builders, which also produced the acclaimed example in Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Toread this report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note:  Highly recommended by our Marketing Manager, who is a dedicated supporter of “The Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust”, is this brilliant example of the pipe organ. Organist Diane Bish plays the 4th March of Edward Elgar'sPomp & Circumstance” on the famous organ of Canterbury Cathedral in England. Click here. (Make sure your sound is set to high for the dramatic experience of the Organ.)

As a second treat for our fellow British expats, also listen to Thomas Heywood perform the “Land of Hope and Glory Pomp and Circumstance Military March” by Sir Edward Elgar, on the Hill, Norman and Beard organ in St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide, Australia. Click here.

One of our staff members asked, “What is the difference between a “pipe organ” and an “electronic organ”?  For the answer, click here.

Poland’s Senate passed what The New York Times editorial page called “a needless, foolish and insulting draft bill that would penalize any suggestion of complicity by the Polish state or the Polish nation in the Nazi death machine,” the National Library of Israel announced that it had received an astonishing donation that proved just how much everyday Poles knew about what was happening in their country.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

9. Education & History: Radio Mercury Theatre on the Air
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Mercury Theatre on the Air was a radio drama headed by Orson Wells and John Houseman. The show released its first broadcast on Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in July 1938 and continued to release shows (later under the name Campbell Playhouse) through March 1940. The show's most famous broadcast aired on October 30, 1938: an adaptation of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds that led some listeners to believe that Earth had really been invaded by Martians. On this website, visitors can listen to old Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcasts (including the War of the Worlds broadcast) in Real Audio or MP3. These shows include performances of The Immortal Sherlock Holmes, Rebecca, The 39 Steps, The Christmas Carol, and much more. In addition, the website includes a 1937 adaptation of Les Miserables, released as seven radio broadcasts. As the site notes, this earlier production featured many of the individuals who would go on to form the Mercury Players.  Visit this site.

Whatever someone may think of US politics, it remains number one around the world because of its booming economy. Britain has dropped out of the top six preferred places for Europeans to move to for work, according to a survey of more than 10,000 workers carried out by accountancy firm BDO, published in January. Almost a quarter of the European respondents ranked the US among their top three countries of choice to relocate.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

Advertisements had a significant influence on the people of colonial America, just as they do today. The Adverts 250 Project allows individuals to have a glimpse into the world of eighteenth-century advertising: each day, the project posts an advertisement that appeared in a publication exactly 250 years ago to the date. These advertisements are selected by history students at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts and are culled from three online archives: Accessible Archives, Colonial Williamsburg's Digital Library, and Readex's America's Historical Newspapers. Many of these advertisements illustrate the horrors of slavery - the project also hosts a Slavery Adverts 250 Twitter account dedicated to sharing slave advertisements. Other featured advertisements provide insight into eighteenth-century reading habits and culture. Visit this site.

Digital signage is a sub-segment of electronic signage. Digital displays use technologies such as LCD, LED and Projection to display content such as digital images, video, streaming media, web pages, weather data, restaurant menu, or text. They can be found in public spaces, transportation systems, museums, stadiums, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, and corporate buildings etc., to provide way-finding, exhibitions, marketing and outdoor advertising. To obtain a copy of the latest free online business guide “Digital Signage Best Practices Guide February 2018click here.

A Man of Good Hope ~ Jonny Steinberg

In January 1991, when civil war came to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, two-thirds of the city’s population fled. Among them was eight-year-old Asad Abdullahi. His mother murdered by a militia, his father somewhere in hiding, he was swept alone into the great wartime migration that scattered the Somali people throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the world.

This extraordinary book tells Asad’s story. Serially betrayed by the people who promised to care for him, Asad lived his childhood at a skeptical remove from the adult world, his relation to others wary and tactical. He lived in a bewildering number of places, from the cosmopolitan streets of inner-city Nairobi to the desert towns deep in the Ethiopian hinterland. Buoyed by success in work and in love, Asad put twelve hundred dollars in his pocket and made his way down the length of the African continent to Johannesburg, South Africa, whose streets he believed to be lined with gold. And so began a shocking adventure in a country richer and more violent than he could possibly have imagined. Read the book, A Man of Good Hope
