Vintage Shopper is run by a husband and wife team out of Los Angeles, CA. It was founded in 2002 as a small online retail store dedicated to selling vintage-inspired clothing, home decor, accessories, collectibles, jewelry, etc. However, we have recently changed that model to one of a vintage community; with the goal to connect vintage shoppers with vintage businesses and amazing products. Whether it’s through fashion, music, decorating or collecting trinkets from eras past, Vintage represents a lifestyle that has grown in popularity across the world and now infuses our daily lives with the nostalgia of a bygone era. That, along with the ever growing number of small vintage-themed businesses popping up online and on street corners, we recognized a need to help Vintage Shoppers shop and businesses market themselves.  Visit this site.

At the time of this writing, for instance, the homepage features articles about the many elections that will be taking place in Africa in 2016, as well as the governmental crisis in Nigeria and the troubles in the Kenyan economy. The page also features an excellent, regularly updated blog. 2. Business: BRICS to Form Capital Market & United Currency Within 5 Years
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Creation of a single capital market of the BRICS grouping of emerging market nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — is possible in the next five years, Sergei Shvetsov, First Deputy Chairman of Russia’s central bank told Russia’s TASS news agency during his visit to China. “We understand that it is better to use the international standards, which could be supported by investors from China and Russia, as well as other investors, including the BRICS. Our goal is to unify the rules, disclosure of accounting, which gives us the opportunity to create access to the stock market for a wide range of participants.”  Also according to an additional report, "The Bank of Russia and the People's Bank of China want to create a joint platform that would unite gold trading by the world's two biggest gold buying countries.” To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note:  We are advising our clients holding South Africa Rands, to hold, as when this new currency and capital market takes hold as envisaged by the BRICS group, the Rand will eventually disappear (which will suit the ANC as it smacks of the Boer days) and the new currency to be created by the BRICS group of nations and fully exchangeable between the BRICS countries, will be dominated by the Chinese currency. Since 2006, the Chinese Renminbi exchange rate has been allowed to float in a very narrow margin around a fixed base rate determined with reference to a basket of world currencies. The Chinese government has announced that it will gradually increase the flexibility of the exchange rate, but against the US$ it is almost on a fixed unchanged equal exchange Rate. See our web page on investing in currencies. Click here.

China has offered Nigeria a loan worth $6-billion to fund infrastructure projects, the Nigerian foreign minister said on Tuesday. The announcement came as both countries signed a currency swap deal to boost trade. Nigeria has been in talks with China on an infrastructure loan for months.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Creamer Media)

4. Business: Chinese Investment in the USA Hits New Record
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Chinese investments in U.S. businesses hit a record $15 billion last year, with California remaining a top destination, but the money increasingly is being spread throughout the nation as investors expand their spending into hospitality, auto parts and other industries. This year is on pace to set another record as China's slowing economy and unsteady exchange rate have spurred investors to seek out more security and diversity abroad.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 5. Business: Ethiopia & Success

Ethiopia is celebrating five years since the start of construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam - the biggest hydropower project in Africa. On completion the dam will generate 6 000MW. The government and people of Ethiopia are funding it themselves. Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing economies on the continent. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

6. Business: Kenya & Germany to be Strategic Partners
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

German Chancellor Angela Merkel Wednesday called Kenya a strategic partner after landmark talks in Berlin with President Uhuru Kenyatta, which focused on security, investment, trade and innovation. President Kenyatta arrived in Berlin at the start of a three-day visit. He held one hour of talks with the Chancellor, which aides on both sides called cordial, business-like, and very fruitful. “Kenya is our strategic partner,” Merkel told a news conference. “We are looking to deepen our relationship further.” To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

7. Business: Latest on the Panama Scandal
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Many of our readers have written in regarding this latest development of funds being held in secret bank accounts in Panama.  While we have no firsthand knowledge of the corruption of this practice we suggest that our readers visit this excellent web site that updates the latest news on Off Shore Accounts, www.OffshoreAlert.com .  The Panamanian state was originally created to function on behalf of the rich and self-seeking of this world – or rather their antecedents in America – when the 20th century was barely born. Panama was created by the United States for purely selfish commercial reasons, right on that historical hinge between the imminent demise of Britain as the great global empire, and the rise of the new American imperium. South Africa’s wine industry employs over 300 000 people. It’s one of the biggest employers in the Western Cape. However, it’s likely to take strain in the next couple of months.  The wine industry is bracing itself for a difficult season. Estimates are that the income at farm gate level will be almost five hundred million down compared to previous years.  The drought, fuel price increases and electricity tariff hikes will also put immense pressure on the industry. Under London’s streets lies a hidden gold mine. It stretches across more than 300,000 square feet under the City, the finance quarter in the heart of Britain’s capital. There, beneath the pavement and commuters of Threadneedle Street, lies a maze of eight Bank of England gold vaults – each stacked with gold bars worth a total sum of around £141 billion ($200 billion). This site from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) presents hundreds of brief biographies of important historical figures. Entries are arranged in alphabetical order, or users may search for notable characters by surname. For example, within the "A" category, readers may peruse biographies dedicated to John Adams, Konrad Adenauer, Agricola, Akhenaten, Prince Albert, St. Andrew, Muhammad Ali, and many others. The entries that accompany each historical figure are erudite and often feature a representative photograph, portrait, or other illustration. Readers should note that this BBC site has been archived and is no longer being updated, however, this should not detract from the wealth of information hidden in the folds of this site. 12. Education & Business: Latest Report About the Whites in Kenya
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

If it was a novel set anywhere else, critics might say it stretched credulity to breaking point. But given the well-documented, real life antics of the remaining white community in Kenya, the details of a high society murder currently being retold in a wood-paneled Nairobi courtroom don’t sound so far-fetched after all. The case in question is the reopened inquest into the killing of fast-living artist Antonio Trzebinski, one of Kenya’s 5,000-strong white elite: born and raised in the country, educated in Britain, but who returned there to live and work. His body was discovered lying next to his white Alfa Romeo on October 16, 2001, with a single bullet wound to the heart. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (Telegraph)

During the Second World War, Kathleen helped her sister Margaret and brother-in-law Bert run a grocery shop in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England. Her diaries – now reproduced in a forthcoming book The View from the Corner Shop: The Diary of a Yorkshire Shop Assistant in Wartime. This new book, View from the Corner Shop offers a fascinating insight into life on Yorkshire’s home front. As our extracts show, the headaches posed by rationing were put into perspective by her fears about the progress of the war, and the terror of the late-night air raid sirens.  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. Photo of the Month

This month we highlight a very disturbing image of what happens in Africa when poor management and business skills result in the demise of a successful enterprise like the Grande Hotel in Mozambique. The Grande Hotel in Mozambique's coastal city of Beira is home to 3,500 squatters. Photo-journalist Fellipe Abreu visited the building once dubbed the "Pride of Africa". Click here.

"Diplomacy in the Early Islamic World -A Tenth-century Treatise on Arab-Byzantine Relations" ~ by Maria Vaiou

Arab messengers played a vital role in the medieval Islamic world and its diplomatic relations with foreign powers. An innovative treatise from the 10th Century ("Rusul al-Muluk", "Messengers of Kings") is perhaps the most important account of the diplomacy of the period, and it is here translated into English for the first time. "Rusul al-Muluk" draws on examples from the Qur'an and other sources which extend from the period of al-jahiliyya to the time of the 'Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tasim  In the only medieval Arabic work which exists on the conduct of messengers and their qualifications, the author Ibn al-Farr rejects jihadist policies in favor of quiet diplomacy and a pragmatic outlook of constructive realpolitik. "Rusul al-Muluk" is an extraordinarily important and original contribution to our understanding of the early Islamic world and the field of International Relations and Diplomatic History. Visit the Book shop and select, Diplomacy in the Early Islamic World: A Tenth-Century Treatise on Arab-Byzantine Relations (Library of Middle East History)
