1. Business: Changes
in Modern Russia

= = = = = = = =
The
news that Russia may join
the World Trade Organization
before the end of 2007 is
further evidence of the
country's transformation
since the demise of the
Soviet Union. When the Soviet
Union died, it did not leave
much behind in the way of
achievement - it won the
Second World War, it ran
an electric cable across
Siberia and it operated
a chain of political prisons
which once contained more
inmates than the combined
populations of Belgium and
Holland. To read the full
report, go to our NEWS

3. Business: How to
Start a Small Business
= = = = = = = = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = =
Starting
a small business can certainly
be a risky proposition,
but with a little assistance
from those who have embarked
on such an entrepreneurial
venture in the past, the
whole process can be made
a bit smoother. The New
York Public Library has
teamed up with the Partnership
for New York City to create
this collection of "how-to"
seminars and podcasts. While
the sessions relate to doing
business in New York specifically,
much of the material and
suggestions could apply
to persons interested in
starting a business just
about anywhere in the United
States or even in other
countries.
Currently
there are eleven broadcasts
available, and they include
such presentations as, How
to Start a Fashion Line
in Today's Market, Legal
Strategies for Small Businesses
and A Quick Guide to
Building a Successful Export
Business. Visit
this site.

Firms
from China and India are
most willing to pay bribes
abroad to do business, a
survey suggests. Anti-corruption
group Transparency International
(TI) put the two countries
at the top of its Bribe
Payers' Index of 30 exporting
nations. To read the full

South Africa and China have
signed an extension to the
memorandum of understanding
in the labour field agreed
to in 2002. China had managed
to create ten million jobs
a year over the past four
years and had much experience
to offer South Africa in
this regard. To read the

Poverty is spreading across
Scotland, with new pockets
of deprivation springing
up outside the big cities,
according to new figures.
The Executive statistics
show the number of deprived
areas is falling in Glasgow.
But there is an increase
in concentrations of poverty
and unemployment in Fife,
the Highlands, Inverclyde,
and Perth and Kinross. To

8. Education: Aids
Still a Major World Problem
= = = = = = = = = = = =
= = = = = = = = = = = =
Aids
in China has spread beyond
high risk groups such as
injecting drug users, prostitutes
and homosexuals and the
country is becoming "like
Africa" in how the
virus is transmitted, a
senior health official says.
"There
are 190 new HIV infections
every day... and in some
high-prevalence areas, nearly
one percent of pregnant
women are infected with
HIV," said Hao Yang,
deputy director general
of the bureau of diseases
prevention and control at
the Ministry of Health.

The
United States Golf Association
is considered one of the
premiere organizations that
have a truly vested interest
in the world of golf course
management, construction,
renovation, and in some
rare instances, rejuvenation.
In order to maintain their
exacting standards, they
have created their own construction
education program. They
have also seen fit to place
some of their information
about the aforementioned
topics online at this site.
For
those working in this field,
starting their career in
the field, or those just
interested in creating a
backyard putting green,
the "Case Studies"
section should be considered
first. Here they will find
timely primers on building
short courses for young
players, tee leveling, and
bunker renovation. Moving
right along, the "Course
Construction" section
contains a variety of articles,
thematically arranged into
such areas as "Greens",
"Tees", and once
again, "Bunkers".
A few of the highlights
among their number include
"Avoiding the Hazards
of Golf Course Renovation"
and "Tee Construction
With Laser Technology".
