1. Business: Corruption in Zimbabwe
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Transparency International issued a briefing this week claiming that corruption is costing Zimbabwe $1 billion a year. I have no doubt that they are right. The question that needs answering is how, where and who is involved. This is not an easy question to answer. Corrupt activities are very difficult to tie down in any sort of legal sense and most anti corruption activists advise that we go after the money and do not try to secure the prosecution of the culprits. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

2. Business: Beware of Nigeria

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election unless he shakes up his government. In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari said the president "does not know" most of the top officials he has appointed. She suggested the government had been hijacked, saying a "few people" were behind presidential appointments. Mr Buhari was elected last year with a promise to tackle corruption and nepotism in government. His wife's decision to go public with her concerns will shock many people, but it shows the level of discontent with the president's leadership, says the BBC's Naziru Mikailu in the capital, Abuja. A consortium made up of the Chinese state-owned mining firm China National Gold Corporation, India's SUN Mining Group and the Russian Far East Development Fund, as well as funds from South Africa and Brazil is prepared to invest up to $500 million in the development of the Klyuchevskoye gold field in the Transbaikal region (over 4,000 miles east of Moscow). The agreement was signed during the most recent BRICS summit, which that took place in the Indian resort of Goa on Oct. 15-16. According to plans for the site, Klyuchevskoye will become operational three years after investment becomes available and will yield some 6.5 tons of gold per year. Leaders of the BRICS grouping have agreed to implement vigorous measures to enhance trade and investment co-operation, including a BRICS ratings agency.  Reading out the Goa declaration, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a raft of investment initiatives including the new ratings agency. “We feel it’s necessary to make public investments in long term infrastructure projects.  In order to bridge the gap in the global financial architecture we agreed to fast track the setting up of the BRICS rating agency.” To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. Chinese investors are expected to fund up to $50 billion in some 500 Israeli start-up companies as the two countries continue to strengthen ties in many areas including trade and travel. “Over the past few years we have seen a series of investments coming to Israel from China, but only now are we beginning to understand the great potential of this cooperation for both countries,” said Amit Lang, director general of Israel’s Ministry of Economy and Industry. He spoke at the second annual “Innovation” China-Israel Investment Conference on Wednesday in Tel Aviv attended by over 1,000 Chinese investors. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel is adamant about cracking down on cartels that he says are pushing people deeper into poverty and raising prices of food and other goods. He told the tenth annual Competition Law, Economics and Policy Conference on Thursday that he hoped newly introduced jail terms of up to ten years would be a powerful way of dissuading companies to get involved in collusion and price fixing. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 8. Business: Latest Update on the Success of BRICS
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Despite doubts about its sustainability and performance, the BRICS mechanism has become a leader of developing countries, and close cooperation within the five-nation bloc will grant emerging economies a bigger say in global affairs. In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis that hit most economies, the five members, namely Brazil, China, India, Russia, and South Africa, are faced with certain difficulties such as imbalanced development, due to the lackluster global growth. The truth is that over the past decade or so, BRICS has become a mature, versatile platform for multinational cooperation among the five developing countries, which have outrun the West in terms of total GDP and are reshaping the geopolitical and global economic order. Home to about 42 percent of the global population, 21 percent of the world's GDP, and nearly half of the world's foreign reserves, BRICS is now a major economic engine that has contributed over half of the global growth in the past decade and is playing an ever greater role in global governance. Researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) have developed a novel device that could help to contain the massive amount of water lost through leaking pipes in South Africa. UCT Department of Civil Engineering researcher Professor Kobus Van Zyl says the device is able to do a sophisticated pressure test on an isolated section of pipe. 11. Immigration & Travel: Expats from South Africa Living Abroad

Where are you from? How long have you been here? When are you going back home? These are the questions expats ask one another in the several Persian Gulf countries that play host to millions of people from more than 200 nationalities, who have all left home in search of better economic opportunities. As a white South African, an answer to the third question is never as simple as it is for those from almost any other background. Do we have a “home” to go back to? The Allegheny Forest region, spread across northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York, is one of the most bypassed sections of the eastern United States.  In a part of the country that is often dominated by urban sprawl, Allegheny’s nearly one million acres of land has no major cities, battlefields or popular historic sites, so the natural environment remains similar to the way the first settlers would have experienced it.
