Katsumi Hirano, executive vice president of the Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro), says South Africa’s image of a "rainbow nation" has faded as the corruption and conflict that pervades governance in many other parts of Africa entrenches itself in SA. "SA is a special country — but gradually has become an ordinary country," says the former executive director of Jetro in Johannesburg. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) hosts this impressive collection of primary source sets designed to facilitate student engagement in a variety of historical and literary topics. These sets were designed by the DPLA's Education Advisory Committee, a team of K-12 and college level educators. One of the most recently added Primary Source Sets is a variety of materials related to Ralph Waldo Ellison's Invisible Man, which includes an FBI file on Ellison for the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and an audio recording of Ellison's 1966 Congressional testimony about social conditions in Harlem. Another primary source set addresses the Columbian Exchange in an excerpt from James Carrick Moore's 1815 book The History of the Small Pox and a photograph of a sweet potato plant taken in 1900. This impressive collection includes dozens of other primary source sets, including Pop Art in the US; Stonewall and its Impact on the Gay Liberation Movement; and Latin American Revolutionaries, to name just a few.  Visit this site.

Between 2008 and 2011, Google digitized almost 1 million pages from over 2,000 historical newspapers. Although Google ceased digitizing newspapers in 2011, visitors can still browse a number of newspapers here. Newspapers featured in this collection include issues of the Nova Scotia's Halifax Citizen published between 1863 and 1873 and Acadian Recorder published between 1854 and 1861; issues of the Baltimore Afro-American published between 1794 and 2003; issues of Montreal's Le Journal d'Agriculture published between 1926 and 1936; and issues of Winnipeg's Jewish Post & News published between 1984 and 1996. As this sampling demonstrates, this collection features a wide variety of newspapers published in parts of Canada and the United States, including papers published in English and French. Visitors can browse this collection by newspaper title and conduct a text search on the whole collection to find articles of interest. Visit this site.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Speaking at an ocean conservation conference, Prince Charles highlighted how plastics were increasingly found in fish caught for the dinner table. In his keynote address, he told delegates at the Our Ocean conference in St Julian's: "As many of you know so well, the eight million tonnes of plastic that enter the sea every year - through our own doing I might add - is now almost ubiquitous.” For all the plastic that we have produced since the 1950s that has ended up in the ocean is still with us in one form or another, so that wherever you swim there are particles of plastic near you and we are very close to reaching the point when whatever wild-caught fish you eat will contain plastic. 7. Immigration: In Search of a New Life?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

While it might sit at the end of a road to nowhere else, as a port city Hull has long been a place for departures and arrivals. It’s population reflects the many different cultures who arrived their by ship from the four corners of the world and Neil Hadlocks sculpture is a tribute to the thousands who passed through it, destined for foreign shores. The statue of family from Northern Europe about to continue their journey to Liverpool and onto America by ship stands on reclaimed land known as The Bullnose, which was where ships waited until high tide before entering Humber Dock. 8. Immigration: How Can a South African Become a British Citizen?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Amid the severe uncertainty in South Africa, many citizens may be looking to emigrate and one option for them is to claim British citizenship. What are some of the ways that South Africans can go about doing this? The most common way (and most people would know that they may have a claim) is through having a UK-born parent, more specifically, a father born in the UK. This would usually lead to a British passport. However, there are quite a few complex areas in British nationality law, with several potential routes to citizenship. Most people aren’t aware of these and that’s something that we focus on and try to raise awareness about. To read the full account, go to our NEWS DESK link.

The new outdoor observation deck will be located at the end of the International Terminal Boarding Area G (United/Star Alliance side). What’s really cool about this location is that you’ll be able to almost reach out and touch the noses of the A380s that dock there– look at the photo and you’ll see the telltale sign of an A380 jet way– it’s really three jet ways in one, which is necessary to load and unload the big bird. The new deck will not only offer great views of big planes, runways and the South San Francisco sign on San Bruno Mountain.  To read the full story and see the latest photo, go to our NEWS DESK link.
