1. Business: Outlook for the sub-Sahara Region of Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy will accelerate going into next year but could be derailed as the world moves onto an uncertain path that could bring an end to the recent synchronised uptrend, a Reuters poll showed on Monday. Economists’ views differ starkly about where exactly in the cycle the global economy is and some reckon it is already in a downturn. Africa’s trading partners are a mixed bag, the US has reached almost full employment but Europe is struggling and China is mired in a trade war. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

The United Nations (UN) is in the midst of a cash crunch and has been forced to implement drastic cost-cutting measures to keep the organisation operational. The measures include shutting down escalators, limiting official travel and reducing air-conditioner use at UN facilities around the globe as the Secretary General attempts to navigate the worst cash crisis the global body has faced in a decade. 3. Business: The Gupta Corruption Network of South Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The US government has placed economic sanctions on members of Gupta family and a business associate for their alleged roles in a "significant corruption network" in South Africa. The three Gupta brothers, friends of former South African president Jacob Zuma, are accused of bribing politicians to advance their business. The order forbids US entities from doing business with the men or handling their assets. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (BBC)

Editor’s Note:  The British government are also planning to impose sanctions on the corrupt Gupta family, according to Lord Peter Hain of the House of Lords in London.  Read more.

4. Business: Zimbabwe Faces Big Increases in Prices Once Again
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Zimbabwe has increased the average electricity tariff by 320% to let the state power utility ramp up production and improve supplies at a time of daily rolling power cuts, the national energy regulator said on Wednesday. Power cuts lasting up to 18 hours have hit mines, industry and homes and, together with a devastating drought, have been cited by the treasury as among the main reasons why the economy is set to contract by up to 6% this year. However, the jump in power costs will further anger Zimbabwean citizens who have in the last week seen sharp rises in fuel and basic goods prices. Salaries have not kept pace, prompting citizens to blame President Emmerson Mnangagwa's policies for the worst economic crisis in a decade. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

6. Education: How to Write a Novel or Historical Narrative
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Freelance writer Chris Baty declared November as National Novel Writing Month in the fall of 2000. Since then, the number of participants in NaNoWriMo, as it's called, has grown from 21 aspiring authors hacking away at manuscripts to over 700,000. The project's "No Plot? No problem" slogan tells it all. No perfectionistic haute culture here. Readers encountering this project for the first time should visit the What is NaNoWriMo? page for an overview, and for those intimidated by the idea, there are helpful NaNo Prep resources and Pep Talks linked at the bottom. Signing up to participate in the challenge is easy and free, and the website will help track your progress, link you to support in your geographical area, and provide platforms to meet fellow writers in person and online. NaNoWriMo is a great resource for encouraging novice and veteran writers alike to work through their writer's block and delve into their creativity. Visit this site.

Editor’s Note: The staff of a client of the Delamere Group, namely MTC International Foundation, is in the process of publishing seven books it has researched.  For more information visit our webpage at this link, click here.

7. Education & Environment: The Global Countryside
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Global Countryside: Rural Change and Development in Globalization (Global-Rural) was a major research project based at Aberystwyth University in Wales that ran from 2014-2019. As its name suggests, this project examined the myriad effects that globalization has had on rural societies and economies, using more than 35 case study locations in 14 countries around the world, including Brazil, Canada, and Malawi. Readers can peruse the extensive fruits of this research at the link above. A good place to start are the story maps, which are organized into thematic categories such as Economy and Trade (e.g. dairy, mining), Global Challenges (e.g. climate change, poverty), and Migration (e.g. forced, historical). Readers interested in viewing the project's numerous other outputs, such as data, academic publications, presentations, and more, should visit the Resources section. Those wishing to see an overview of the project's major findings should view the story map entitled "Narrating the Global Countryside," which can be accessed on the main page. Global-Rural was led by Michael Woods, a Professor of Human Geography and of Transformative Social Science at Aberystwyth University, and supported with funding from the European Research Council. 8. Education: The History of Black Slavery in the USA
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Readers interested in African American history, as well as those studying or working in a higher education setting, may be interested in this informative digital exhibition from the University of North Carolina (UNC) University Libraries. Grown from a University Archives digitization project, Slavery and the Making of the University seeks to "introduce materials that recognize and document the contributions of slaves, college servants and free persons of color primarily during the university's antebellum period." Readers should begin by reading the Introduction section, which gives an overview of the creation and contents of the site. Next, visitors can read about The College Servants, Campus Incidents, Writings & Speeches on Slavery, and more. Most sections of the website feature digitized primary documents, with links to finding aids or information about accessing the original sources, and there is also a downloadable Walking Tour of the UNC-Greensboro campus. The site is searchable via a search bar in the upper right corner, and users can filter by query type and record type in a drop-down menu. An Advanced Search feature is also available. The exhibition was compiled by Assistant University Archivist Susan Ballinger, Research Assistant Janis Holder, and University Archivist Bari Helms. Visit this site

9. Immigration: Secure a Second European Passport
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The enticement of a second European Passport through Investment has seen Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Portugal experiencing a vast increase of applicants from South Africa. Since 2018, there has been an increase of 364% in interest from South Africans for a second passport. What many South Africans call “Plan B” continues to gain popularity. With a European Passport, the prospect of living in any country forming part of the European Union is highly attractive. South Africans are looking to their future and that of their children, the idea of having the opportunity to study and work in any country across the EU remains appetizing.
