Photographic Records of Britain

The Frith archive was founded in 1860 and contains over 365,000 photographs of some 7,000 towns and villages throughout Britain. Taken between 1860 and 1970 these form a topographical record of Britain without equal and is recognised as the only photographic collection of national importance remaining in private hands. Whilst some of the photographs are undoubtedly artistically outstanding, the real value of the archive lies in its personal relevance for anyone with connections to the British Isles. 1. Business: African Continental Free Trade Area

Support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement formed part of discussions at the 42nd General Assembly of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), currently underway in Cape Town. “It is expected that with the reduced barriers to trade, the growth in intra-Africa trade, of an estimated $2 trillion, will be traded internally within the next year,” said the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). 2. Business: Africa’s Future?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Last month, unnoticed by much of the media, Africa’s leaders announced the creation of a continent-wide free-trade area that will potentially bring together 1.3 billion people in a $3.4 trillion economic zone. The success of this project hinges on whether nations actually do reduce tariffs and other trade barriers, but if they do, trade could rise by as much as 50 percent in the next few decades, according to the International Monetary Fund. As the IMF put it, “This could be an economic game changer for the continent.” To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

Editor’s Note: Read this other opinion on the future of South Africa by Patrick Cairns of Money Web. “The biggest challenge facing the South African economy is not low growth. It is the belief that there is no opportunity. When people feel there is no path to seeing a return on their money, they don’t invest. And without investment, economic activity stutters. This sentiment is of course understandable. On a macro view, the South African economy does not look appealing. The strategic plan released by National Treasury last week acknowledges that structural reforms have to happen to change the country’s fortunes.” Read the full report, click here.

3. Business: Benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When some people think of artificial intelligence (AI), they think of humanoid robots turning against their creators in an apocalyptic science fiction movie. In reality, AI is already playing an increasing role in many existing and evolving technologies, from driverless cars to translation software, virtual assistance devices and monitoring agriculture and biodiversity. Audrey Azoulay, director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), says that promoting AI in Africa is a top priority for the organization. The BRICS’s New Development Bank (NDB) regional office in South Africa hopes to end 2019 with total loan approvals of about R32.5 billion, according to the bank’s president, Kundapur Kamarth.  The regional office was opened in August 2017, and the bank’s board of directors approved three projects worth R11.2bn during the 4th annual meeting of the bank that finished yesterday. For those with an interest in medieval manuscripts, the digital library e-codices will be a welcome boon. First launched in 2005, e-codices bills itself as the "Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland" and provides visitors with "free online access to medieval and early modern manuscripts from public and church-owned collections as well as from numerous private collections." Here, visitors will find more than 2,200 digitized manuscripts, totaling more than 800,000 pages, from approximately 100 participating libraries and collections. Several collections are highlighted on the main page, and the Browse & Search section allows visitors to filter the e-codices collections by numerous fields, such as the text language, document type, and whether it is illuminated. While few of the manuscripts were originally written in English, all static pages and basic metadata on the e-codices website are available in English, as well as German, French, and Italian. The e-codices project was founded by its director Christoph Flueler, a professor of Manuscript Studies and Medieval Latin at the University of Fribourg. Since 2013, e-codices has been part of the initiative "Scientific information: Access, processing and safeguarding," which is a national program of swissuniversities, the umbrella organization for universities in Switzerland. From November 21 2019, South Africans will have to invest more cash to get on the fast track to a US green card, while taking a greater risk in US development projects that will no longer be located in Tier 1 locations.  The US immigration department has provided a narrow window of opportunity to invest $500,000 (about R7.4m) but only if it receives the initial application on or after this date. On or after November 21 2019, the minimum investment amount will increase to $900,000 (about R13.3m).  To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.
