The African Development Bank and its East and North African Governors have stressed the need for urgent measures to match the continent’s growing population and youth unemployment, which they likened to a “ticking time bomb.”  The meeting described the continent’s growing young population as a potential growth engine for the world.  “The good news is that the solution is within our reach and will require investments,” said Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank.  At the end of a two-day consultation at the headquarters of the Bank in Abidjan, the Bank and the Governors discussed strategizes for closing Africa’s $170 billion infrastructure investment gap. Kenya’s deputy chief justice Philomena Mwilu was arrested Tuesday on corruption allegations, failure to pay tax, and improper dealings with a local bank now in receivership, the police and the country’s top prosecutor said. Noordin Mohamed Haji told a news conference that Mwilu had abused her office for personal gain, undermining public integrity in the judiciary. Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti told Reuters in a text message, “I can confirm the arrest of the deputy chief justice”. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

3. Business: IMF to Help Angola with Financial Support

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday it would begin talks with Angola over providing financial support after the oil producing country's economic growth was weaker than expected this year. Africa's second-largest oil producer has been hit by lower oil prices, which have caused a dollar liquidity squeeze that has made it difficult for foreign companies to repatriate profits and discouraged many from investing.
Angola's Finance Ministry said on Monday it had sought financial support from the IMF but did not provide further detail on how much money was involved. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday witnessed the signing of two agreements that will see two US companies invest $238 million worth (Sh24 billion) of projects in Kenya. The President urged the US government to facilitate the operations of US businesses in Africa. The US Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and Kipeto Wind Energy Company signed documents to close a $232 million deal for construction and operation of a 100-megawatt grid-connected wind power plant south of Nairobi. 6. Education & History: Historic Liverpool, England

Map and history aficionados may be interested in exploring Historic Liverpool, created by Martin Greaney, a landscape archaeologist, and Liverpool native. Historic Liverpool features a series of interactive maps depicting the historic landscapes of Liverpool and its surrounding area. Visitors can zoom into and click the maps for further details about a specific location. For example, on the History Map, viewers will find a collection of historic features marked by location pins (grouped in categories such as Archaeological Sites and Hidden History) that, when clicked, display a brief description and a link to a blog post with more details and images. The sidebar on the left provides navigation between Historic Liverpool's different main maps, and the site also has a search bar for those who prefer to search by text. Greaney continues to add new material regularly, and the wealth of information available is impressive--as one visitor commented, Historic Liverpool is "as good a reason as I've come across for wasting time constructively.”  Visit this site.

Editor’s Note: One of the most impressive features of Liverpool and Manchester was the building of the Manchester Ship Canal.  It stretches for 36 miles from Eastham, on the southern shore of the Mersey estuary 6 miles from Liverpool, almost to the centre of Manchester. .For a series of photos and virtual tour of this major engineering feat, click here.

7. Education: Nature’s Notebook
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Nature's Notebook is a fun and educational citizen science project focused on phenology throughout the United States. Here, nature lovers of all ages can contribute to science by observing the seasonal life-cycles of plants and wildlife. Visitors to Nature's Notebook will find educational resources for all grade levels (including lesson plans, activities, and archived presentations), help for local phenology groups (including how to start one), links to multimedia (including podcasts, videos, and webinars), and most importantly, opportunities and instructions (also available in Spanish) for participating in one of their many nature observation campaigns. After creating a free account, participants can enter data of their observations for as many species as they would like and they will also have access to a dashboard showing visualizations of their entered data. Nature's Notebook provides numerous resources for learning how to do phenological observations and they also have mobile apps available for Android and iOS devices. This long-running program was launched in 2009 by the USA National Phenology Network, "a national-scale science and monitoring initiative" formed in partnership between multiple government agencies, resource managers, and volunteers (among many others)."  Visit this site.

8. Education & Environment: Rhino Poaching & Corruption in South Africa

BBC Africa Correspondent Alastair Leitheid investigates bribes allegedly paid to a court syndicate, and reveals the magistrates and lawyers now being investigated… including a regional court president. BBC says: “A thousand rhinos are being killed every year in South Africa – and there are less than 25,000 left. Their horn is worth more than cocaine on the Asian black market, but it’s not just the greed of poachers and traffickers – corruption is apparently fuelling the crisis.” To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. 9. Travel: Yellowstone National Park, USA

Chris Packham still holds onto a copy of a 30-year-old National Geographic magazine about this iconic place. Growing up in a British suburb, he could only read about Yellowstone and look at pictures of its wildlife and vast tracts of mostly untouched land, an uncommon sight on the comparatively small island of Great Britain. "We cannot even imagine national parks on this scale," said Packham, a wildlife ecologist who regularly appears on TV programs. "It's one of those landscapes where it's truly epic in its proportions and scale." To read more, go to our NEWS DESK link. (USA Today)

"It's very important that we re-learn the art of resting and relaxing. Not only does it help prevent the onset of many illnesses that develop through chronic tension and worrying; it allows us to clear our minds, focus, and find creative solutions to problems." ~ Thich Nhat Hanh, a Tibetan Buddhist
