1. Business & Travel: South African President’s Office is a Glorified Travel Agency?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Since Cyril Ramaphosa became President in February 2018, members of his cabinet as well as their deputies have used taxpayer money to pay for no fewer than 949 overseas trips. Given that Ramaphosa has now been in office for 912 days, this means that his government has forced taxpayers to pay for ministers and deputies to gallivant overseas at a rate of more than one trip every single day. At a time when millions of South Africans are suffering due to the ANC lockdown crisis, it is absolutely scandalous that the President has turned his office into a glorified travel agency for ANC cadres, courtesy of long-suffering South African taxpayers. The most popular destination for ANC cadres was the bright lights of the United States, which they visited 82 times. Next on the cadre bucket list was China (64 visits), Ethiopia (57 trips), and Switzerland (49 excursions). Some cadres were also lucky enough that their “official business” took them to luxury destinations like the Seychelles and Mauritius five times apiece. What is even more disgusting about the Ramaphosa government’s contempt for citizens is that the vast majority of these flights were likely in first or business class. 2. Business: Latest News Zimbabwe a Failed Liberation State
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

South Africa’s biggest trade union Numsa has blasted Pretoria over its silence on the on-going crackdown by the Zimbabwean government on its citizens. This comes after mass protests over hyperinflation and other socio-economic woes in the troubled southern African state were met with violence by security forces and arrest of activists, journalists and civilians. “Zimbabwe is in the vicious grip of a failed liberation movement which has dumped the liberation vision just as the African National Congress (ANC) has done in South Africa. The only way Zanu-PF keeps hold of power is to unleash and sponsor violence against its own people,” Numsa said. To read the full report, go to our NEWS DESK link. (IOL)

3. Education & Travel: Welsh Emigrants to Australia
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Although the first Welsh emigrants to Australia may have wished that they could find a better life than the one they had experienced in Wales, they were probably just as keen to escape the land to which they had now been sent. They were not really emigrants at all, but convicts - four men and two women, who arrived with the First Fleet at Botany Bay, Australia, in 1788. By 1852, a total of about 1,800 of the convicts in Australia had been tried in Wales - about 1.2% of the total number of convicts transported to Australia by that time. Of these, only around 300 were women. Many who were transported could speak only Welsh, so they were doubly damned - forced into exile in a strange land, they were often unable to communicate with the majority of convicts who spoke only English. The reason we include this item in our monthly Newsletter is that this story came to our attention while our staff were researching the manuscript of a brilliant new book, soon to be released by the “MTC International Foundation” called “Masters & Slaves of Modern Religion”.  The following is a short extract from the manuscript regarding Philip David Morgan Rees, a member of the Watchtower Society, also known as Jehovah’s Witnesses.

“A couple of weeks before Philip was due to leave for Australia a mutual friend took Phil and his wife on a trip to the South Wales Valleys in Carmarthenshire and especially the beautiful Rhondda Valley, as this was a personal request of Philip’s. He wanted to see for one last time the place where his grandparents had lived and where his father was born and lived working in the coal mines before moving to Australia.  A small group of friends bought Philip an original copy of the best selling book, “How Green Was My Valley” written by Richard Llewellyn in 1939, plus a copy of the video tape of the Hollywood award winning film released in 1941 by the same name, directed by John Ford and staring the young 13 year old British actor Roddy McDowall.  Phil said that this presentation was the most treasured gift he had ever received as it was the story of the Morgan family and their struggles working in the filthy coal mines of Wales. Don’t forget that Philips middle name was “Morgan”, which was his grandmother’s maiden name, so Phil must have personally related to the fictitious family portrayed in this film and we are sure that as Philip watched this film many times during his last remaining years spent in the private care center in Australia and he must have compared the battles and struggles of the Morgan family in Wales with his own.

4. Education: For Lovers of Poetry
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Poets and poetry enthusiasts will delight in the Eighteenth-Century Poetry Archive, "a peer-reviewed, award-winning digital archive and research project devoted to the poetry of the long eighteenth century." Expanding on versions of text provided by the Text Creation Partnership from Gale's Eighteenth Century Collections Online, this archive has two main aspects: a digitized poetry catalog and research and analysis of these texts. The "Take the tour" button in the top-right corner is a great place to begin, providing a "10-step (2 min.) quick tour of the core features on any of the poem pages in the Eighteenth-Century Poetry Archive." From there, readers can browse all collection pieces (cataloged alphabetically) on the Works page. More than 3,000 poems from nearly 320 authors are featured. The site also offers "built-in digital tools" and helpful resources. University of Oxford Digital Librarian Alexander Huber founded and edited the project, which was conceptualized and completed between 2006 and 2019, with some ongoing updates.  Visit this site.

5. Travel & Education: First Peoples of Canada
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

First Peoples of Canada, a virtual exhibition from the Canadian Museum of History, explores Aboriginal peoples' "fight for cultural survival and ... the wealth of their modern-day contributions." Relying on research and artifacts from the First Peoples Hall of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the exhibition explores Canada's linguistic diversity (with more than 50 Aboriginal languages), the history of the First Nations, and relationships with the environment. Additionally, the exhibition's An Aboriginal Presence section includes brief biographies on prominent Indigenous community members. Readers can view the exhibition in its entirety by clicking through each page using the arrow icons or navigate to specific sections using the Index. The exhibition is available in English and French. Clicking "Back to Exhibitions" at the top of the page allows readers to explore some of the Museum's other offerings, including Inuit Prints from Cape Dorset and A History of the Native People of CanadaVisit this site.

Photo of the Month

This month we have selected a video clip that has created many comments and much praise for the achievements of space exploration. What if you could fly over Pluto -- what might you see? The New Horizons spacecraft did just this in 2015 July as it shot past the distant world at a speed of about 80,000 kilometers per hour. Recently, many images from this spectacular passage have been color enhanced, vertically scaled, and digitally combined into the featured two-minute time-lapse video.  Make sure your sound is turned on.
